Apparently, Western Sparrows also like to visit NYC during their holiday (World Sparrow Day). This Oregon's Dark-eyed Junco has been at Floyd Bennett Field for few days now. This film from today shows nice comparison with our usual juncos especially the sizes. Video by Gus Keri.

In Homer, the text is entirely oblivious of the fact that the characters belong to different peoples presumably speaking different languages. They all effortlessly talk to each other In the Homeric hymn to Aphrodite, on the other hand, 1/n

Scientists love staying stuff like this. Has anyone challenged them on what it really means? The passage of time leaves many different kinds of evidence: hands on a clock, aging, erosion, etc. What specifically are they talking about?

A google news search yields very few results for the terms "intellectual honesty" and "intellectual dishonesty." I guess the media doesn't *actually* like to "cover itself," like so many say.

The law says you have to put a fence around a swimming pool. Where are the laws for fencing lakes, rivers, and oceans which pose the same, if not worse, risks as swimming pools? @POTUS @GovKathyHochul @NYCMayor

@audioguido Yeah, it’s completely different than, say, laughing at a pun, where the laughter indicates understanding.

The six-seven meme that has been trending is more of a cue to laugh than a joke. Laughter is not the outcome of the cognitive process of getting a joke. Instead, laughter at 6-7 is social glue that indicates people are members of the same social contract. #67 #sixseven

Yes, this is phatic humor (or affiliative/ritual humor): nonsense phrases like "six seven" that signal group belonging rather than deliver a punchline. Linguists describe it as carrying social meaning over informational—exactly as you said. Robert Provine's research ("Laughter: A Scientific Investigation") shows laughter is mostly a bonding cue, often triggered by social context, not joke comprehension. The 6-7 meme (from Skrilla's "Doot Doot," basketball edits, and the 67 Kid) is a perfect modern shibboleth for Gen Alpha in-group vibes. Similar to skibidi toilet nonsense.

My work right now consists of writing about some technical musical details of the Suzanne Vega song, Tom’s Diner, which sounds fun, right? The problem is I can’t work, because Tom’s Diner is stuck in my head.

We don’t remember Nat King Cole as a Country-Western artist, but I am today learning that Ramblin’ Rose (1962) was one of his most successful albums, according to Billboard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramblin%2…

Me here trying to get stuff done. Phil Schaap on the radio saying the first documented professional saxophonist in the USA was Buster Keaton’s mom, Myra. I had never even considered that Buster Keaton had a mom. 🤯

I just read a credible source claim the following about Harry Truman: 1) He was not aware Hiroshima was specifically a civilian target. 2) He was almost certainly surprised by the bombing of Nagasaki a couple days later.

Hey @grok, why do some items, like textiles and bedding, have tags that say “do not remove this tag under penalty of law”? It seems a bit absurd, doesn’t it?
