@rorysutherland @Vectis64 It's KYC and AML compliance and it's a legal requirement. Nothing to do with the bank. Just fill in the forms and don't whine like a little baby.

There is no longer any point in a bank employing a marketing department at all if they continue to allow their compliance and legal departments to write to their existing customers unsupervised, demanding we spend hours ticking boxes for them. I've been with my bank for 40 years, but their emails treat me as if I'm Boko Haram trying to open a business account for an American candy store on Oxford Street.

@SmartGrowthUK @mattwridley Claiming that an energy policy with government-set targets that affects literally every part of our economy & society is the same as the market-driven demise of a widget factory is moronic. You really aren't as clever as you think.

@mattwridley So should cities which have suffered from the decline of an industry be allowed to determine policy on that industry? Some interesting ramifications ahead.

@alexandrosM This is the result of decades of Progressivism. Progressive politicians are supported by Progressives in the justice system, public health, intelligence, energy, academia. There is no independent scrutiny, no independent evidence or research, law.

@sourpanda7 @robjessel16 Because being Progressive demands that you believe in all sorts of dumb conspiracy theories about things like bond markets.

@get_involved1 @sourpanda7 @robjessel16 The last point plus the fact that understanding & then basing policy on that understanding would make him persona non granta in Progressive circles. Progressives currently believe in MMT, so he believes in MMT.

@sourpanda7 @robjessel16 Studiously made it his business not to know? Didn’t think it important to know? Knowing & understanding them would mess up his ideological standpoints?

@robjessel16 I think the image that he uses online and has recently used for campaigning, says a lot about him. In his head, this is him - image, image, image. It has the same level of detail as he knows and understands about issues.

@robjessel16 Because he is completely vacuous. He appears to have never read even a fairly long article on anything let alone a book & gid forbid a book that challenges his beliefs. It's just yet more teenage feelings but done a bit more.

@rcolvile Striking how poor most of the teams predicted to be fighting it out for 3rd & perhaps 2nd have been. Teams willing to play quickly & looking to score 2-3 are doing well, the low block, keep it tight lot are doing really badly. Let's see if Spain has got the message.

@cjsnowdon Much as I detest Blair & believe he wrecked much of the country, he was a real PM who wanted change & wasn't afraid of making that change. Everyone since then has been like management at a 3rd rate university, obsessed with peripheral nonsense & unable to tackle actual problems.

@aDissentient No more alarming than leaving Starmer in place. Labour MPs are deluded. They cannot accept their economic policies are wrong & will not accept ordinary people don't want their Progressive policies. So we get tweaks presented as change.

British politics for the past decade: 1. New Prime Minister arrives. 2. Same policies on immigration, economy, eco bs, crime as before. 3. Same civil service dysfunction & public discontents. 4. Forced out. 5. New Prime Minister arrives. 6. Repeat Systematic change, not soap opera, is needed

Looking at the by-elections, it feels like British politics is in a bit of a Game of Thrones-style stalemate - each of the many parties is too weak to win, but strong enough to stop its rivals from winning...

@rcolvile You could well be right. But interesting that Makerfield result was despite the usual sniping & smearing from MSM (which I only saw a bit of as I dont watch British TV much or read UK newspapers)

@rcolvile @CPSThinkTank @Telegraph Lyon’s is another Brexit goon, totally discredited, wheeled out by Tories to justify their opportunism in 2016. You can continue to be flat earth morons, or engage with the globally accepted, intensely intricate, modelling performed by independent economists across the world.

@simonmedhurst @rcolvile @CPSThinkTank @Telegraph Remainers are so dim. Exports are a cost, genius. They are domestic inputs consumed by foreigners. They do not & cannot make us wealthier. We export solely so we can import, & the less we have to export to obtain imports, the better. It's called Economics.

@rcolvile @CPSThinkTank @Telegraph Can you explain how making trade more difficult with our nearest and largest market (without anything like a commensurate easing of trade elsewhere) could ever be anything other than negative for the UK economy?

Javier Cercas, outstanding Spanish novelist and writer, and self-described socialist voter, summarizes well the situation in Spain in El Pais: it is hard to explain "that a president should remain in office when his wife, his brother, his latest right-hand person, his previous right-hand person, the right-hand person of his previous right-hand person, and a group from his own party have all been charged by the courts, and whose Organization Secretary, according to the judge, devised a ‘criminal structure’ to discredit adversaries” elpais.com/eps/2026-06-20…
