@AnnabelDenham1 Yes, but with regards to 2024 we get to vote again in 2029. With 2016 - not so much.

@john4brexit Why don't you just accept that Brexit makes us poorer, but you think it's a price worth paying for your illusions of 'sovereignty'? That would at least be a defensible position.

@DamianLow3 Maybe - but the UK was also self-sufficient in energy until that was removed by her policies. We could do with being self-sufficient again, now. The consequences of privatisation were entirely predictable.

Water privatisation must be the worst part of Thatcher’s legacy? Agree?

@john4brexit Leaving the EU has increased red-tape, primarily through new non-tariff barriers, customs formalities, and regulatory compliance for trade with the EU. Studies suggest this has added billions in costs, created over 1m extra export health certificates, and reduced trade volumes.

@griffitha Around 140 countries have Net Zero commitments - if they have a steel industry, are they destroying their's, too? Genuine question btw.

Steel is struggling because of ruinous net zero energy policy. Instead of sacking Ed Miliband, the Government is making manufacturers and users foot the bill with tariffs and higher steel prices. It's fantasy economics that will cost us jobs and growth.

@john4brexit 'superior trade deals'? Which ones? Certainly not the UK-India trade deal. This is from Gemini 'the EU-India trade agreement is considered more comprehensive and ambitious than the UK-India trade deal signed in July 2025, largely due to the EU's superior economic leverage'

Rejoining the EU would mean free movement to U.K. for everyone coming into the EU , us paying around £34 billion fee pa, adopting the euro, no control of interest rates, EU regulation by technocrats, loss of superior trade deals , likely EU army, EU Net Zero disaster, etc
Sadiq Khan@SadiqKhan

The evidence is overwhelming: Brexit has been a disaster for London and the UK. Rejoining the EU is now clearly in our national interest. The option to rejoin should be on the ballot at the next General Election. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

It’s not even 7am and I’m surrounded by incompetence. ▪️insane Net zero policy has destroyed traditional “virgin” steelmaking in the UK. ▪️The replacement electric arc furnace isn’t ready and that still depends on our massively expensive energy. (stop laughing at the back) The government’s BRILLIANT idea (this is sarcasm) is tariffs of 50% on imported steel. Making it more expensive. Er … The government is one of the biggest buyers of steel in the country. This policy simply increases the costs of taxpayer funded projects. And increases the price to businesses which will er … push prices up, raising inflation. It’s too early for this bollocks 🤡

@PaulPexton @terrychristian Referenda should not be used for complex issues like EU membership - we pay MPs to be across the detail and vote accordingly. Even if referenda are advisory only, the pressure to implement becomes overwhelming (will of people etc..).

@terrychristian Referenda are fine in their place but we should note they are only ever advisory. We were never obliged to screw our country over on the basis of a flawed advisory poll in which 1/2 the people didn’t vote and the result was essentially split down the middle anyway.

Remember - this is every brexit voter still doubling down on being moronic and why we should never ever have referendums in the UK that allow spivs to con the intellectually vulnerable .

@LiamFox I am old enough to remember when UK electricity and the fuel that generated it were both publicly owned and energy-intensive industries paid a preferential rate for electricity. Then along came Thatcher and we are where we are.

A sad day for Britain’s long established reputation for free trade as Labour impose new steel tariffs. Now we have joined the fashion for protectionism we can’t complain when others do it. This year marks the 250 year anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. A sad day that bodes badly for the future. Instead of opting for protectionism the government should roll back the absurd energy policy where UK steel producers pay up to £22/MWh more for electricity than competitors in Germany and France. This is 50% more than European competitors and twice that of US/Canada. This disparity adds an estimated £37 million to £50 million in additional annual electricity costs for the UK steel sector. Stop the self harm first!
