Making our roads safer for all road users is a key priority for me in West Brom 🚗 Earlier this year I was out with police, Sandwell Council and the DVLA to catch people driving with no insurance, no MOT, illegal numberplates and more 😠

Great to be back in Sandwell, close to the council flat I grew up in, speaking with local residents. Labour is delivering for Sandwell and will keep doing so. Reform offers chaos, division, and broken promises. The choice on the 7th May is clear.

Some people ask me: what is Labour even doing for Sandwell? 🤔 Well in the last few weeks alone we have announced: £20 million of investment for Tividale, supporting Oldbury Health Centre to deliver more appointments, a funding boost for SEND AND two new schools-based nurseries

From today, energy bills will come down. Labour took the decision to bring down bills by asking the wealthiest to pay a little more. That’s the fair thing to do. We know there’s more to do to tackle the cost of living but this is an important step.

Fantastic to have Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood in Sandwell to support our local election campaign. 💪 We stand against division and will always stand up for communities across Sandwell 😄

@Prim1877 Yeah of course but it would be an honest starting point if fans conceded it was actually them (the majority) that wanted technology.

I feel like I should go to a priest with a confession like this, but I don’t want VAR to go. Football before VAR was dominated by referee gaffes. You lot pleaded for technology. It wasn’t quite the technology you wanted, so you moaned again. Fewer mistakes are made now.

@scottjwillis No fans hate it because it kills spontaneity. Why is that so difficult for people to understand? Killing the sport for a few extra right decisions is ridiculous. VAR will never work in football

VAR isn’t perfect and that’s because we have humans implementing a subjective rule book. It’s still a net positive for the game and has corrected most of the biggest clear errors. People dislike it but they hate massive errors that go against them more that you can see clearly on replays.

I like the idea of giving any benefit of doubt to the attacking team. ‘Toe Nails’ offside frankly is not football. A law should be evolved to promote goals not call them off. VAR is not operating correctly
Ben Jacobs@JacobsBen

🚨 The Canadian Premier League will conduct a 'daylight offside' trial in cooperation with FIFA when its season starts on April 4. The trial is led by FIFA and approved by IFAB. It is designed to favour attackers. 🗣️ FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development Arsene Wenger: "This is an important pilot. By testing this new interpretation in a professional competition, we can better understand its impact, including in terms of improving clarity and the flow of the game and promoting attacking play. "We look forward to analysing the results of the trial phase. We thank the Canadian Premier League and the Canadian Soccer Association for their willingness to support FIFA with this pilot and for providing their competition." An attacking player will be considered onside if at least one part of their body that can legitimately be used to score in line with (or behind) the second-to-last defender. A player will only be ruled offside if there is a gap – or daylight' – between themselves and the defender. In effect, attackers must be fully beyond the second last defending player to be penalised. FIFA add by "introducing a clearer visual threshold, the trial is aimed at restoring a greater attacking advantage and boosting the flow of matches."

@TheRefereeForum We might get a few more right decisions but at the expense of killing the passion of the game. Nothing is more important than the ecstasy of a goal being scored

The problem with asking the average fan Their opinions about the laws of the game is that they haven't got a clue so their baseline is incredibly skewed from the off. For example, they think that VAR hasn't improved decision-making accuracy when it clearly has.

Premier League fans deliver damning verdict on VAR. 75% of 7,946 fans polled by the Football Supporters’ Association “didn’t support the use of VAR”. Too long, too forensic, too much of a joy killer, fans say. Findings shared with Premier League and PGMO. 92% of fans surveyed “agreed” that “VAR has removed the spontaneous joy of goal celebrations” (82% of them “strongly agreed”). 85% of match-going fans “strongly disagreed” with the notion that “VAR makes watching football more enjoyable”. And 83% of those watching on TV. 85% of match-going fans “strongly disagreed” that “VAR decisions are generally resolved in a reasonable amount of time”. Echoed by 83% of those watching on TV. Only 18% agreed that “VAR has improved the overall accuracy of refereeing decisions”. 72% are “concerned about the expansion of VAR beyond its current remit”. 79% “strongly disagreed” with the suggestion “that the match-going experience is better with VAR”. 67% “strongly agreed” that they preferred “watching games that are played without VAR to games with VAR”. 84% “strongly support” goal-line technology. 34% “strongly opposed” to the idea of a challenge system (two per game per team). “These findings back up the FSA's previous survey in 2021, where fans expressed misgivings about the introduction of VAR,” says Thomas Concannon, @WeAreTheFSAPremier League network manager. “The vast majority are reporting the same concerns five years on - the loss of spontaneity when celebrating goals, and an overall worsening of the match-going experience. We have shared the survey results with the Premier League and PGMO, and look forward to discussing its findings with them.” Fans surveyed of all PL clubs and all ages (Under-18 to 65+).

I understand your point but there is real frustration about VAR and its implementation. Former @premierleague @FA_PGMOL Graham Scott in @Telegraph " hated standing around waiting for a colleague to pore over the pixels of an impossibly tight offside decision" VAR overturning goals not in spirit of even is on every week around the world

Do 75% of fans really oppose VAR? That's the claim by the Football Supporters' Association. But not based on scientific, random sampling polling representative of all fans. It was through a website fans had to chose to click on which could skew to those more strongly with views

@RobHarris I’m surprised it’s only 75%. What isn’t surprising is how many pundits, journalists and blue tick bell ends still won’t listen to match going fans and keep saying VAR will improve
