@JenkemSuperfan The divisiveness really just comes from the glazing he gets, like with anything big and popular there'll be people who are dissatisfied with the attention it receives in comparison to other things. Again personally I don't have gripes with the man but I do understand the feeling

@Protodedester It's completely fine to be unhappy with the direction he took things, but downplaying his contribution is a bit silly imo.

@JenkemSuperfan hence The Next Generation Patlabor. Masami Yuki was the one who spearheaded the concept along with Izubuchi and Tomato Aki, the other members slowly piling in. IIRC Oshii was doing Patlabor initially cause he needed the money but did like a few of the concepts

@JenkemSuperfan Oshii kind of has this "light" interest in Patlabor to me, most of the time he had Kazunori Ito watching over his shoulder so not everything was him 100% (Even Patlabor 2). He doesn't have much of an interest in Noa and despises Kanuka, and is pretty critical of the concept-

@JenkemSuperfan Personally I don't mind him or his work, he wrote a lot of funny episodes for TV and The New OVA

@JenkemSuperfan Made even worse the fact that the praise he and his movies gets tend to overshadow the other material a lot more closer to Patlabor's concept. Sometimes it gets to the point where people misconstrue Oshii for the driving force behind Patlabor's setting and characters-

@spacebruce The joke is that the reader imagines someone seeing this thing's expression for the first time and it sparks joy

@erstatiz Well that was the main thing that I just felt like I should've responded too, I also should've specified sooner that I wasn't necessarily imprinting random /m/ user #213123 opinion onto you. "Headgear is a bunch of uncreative hacks" does not sound like a reasonable statement

@Protodedester Hey, I'm not knocking Headgear in the creativity department, the /m/ post was! I am knocking them for the Mori Calliope opening, which in one sense you can argue is creative lol. For me, this post was more of a springing off point to discuss the interesting way Oshii is viewed

@erstatiz trying to make something new. I don't hate Oshii or his work, I think what he did for Patlabor was fine even if I disagree with him on things

@erstatiz I'll go ahead and circle back to my main point here just so we're on the same wavelength. I think it's unfair to knock Headgear on EZY or whatever in regards to "creativity" while praising TNG in the same vein. From what I've been able to parse, all the members are definitely-

@erstatiz So when we’re given a lot of these shot for shot scenes and events that have clearly been insinuated to have happened before in Patlabor 2, it’s a little difficult to give it the benefit of the doubt. By the time Haibara becomes a talking point, it’s not really trying to be silly

@erstatiz Well the thing about it is that yeah most of TNG is like parody and satire, so I can sometimes ignore the stuff in it. Tokyo War presents itself as something to be taken much more seriously, you can definitely tell by comparing a regular episode and the film-

@erstatiz Sure you can argue it's creative from a conceptual standpoint, but that doesn't inherently make TNG much of a creative series in it's own right, see my other reply

@Protodedester Yeah, the concept of moving past Labors in TNG is definitely audacious and creative
