The exit of World Blitz Championship Finalist Ian Nepomniachtchi, and his exit from the top 20 happened as gracefully as we are used to from his side. I predict that there will be no return to the elite for him. Our system is constructed in a way, where it requires something extra to be invited to top events. Living in the right place, being liked by an organiser, being young. Being Russian is no longer an asset in chess. No one wants to invite someone who smears the event when he plays badly. And Nepomniachtchi is past the age of having a promising future. Most sports careers ends without noise. This whimper is likely to be the last important thing we will hear from Nepomniachtchi. If he continues in the future, he will be like other former stars, who are now bit players and occasionally bring back some memories of having been good with a few good games. But I doubt he will keep a serious work ethic, and he will end his career never having won a big trophy, although he was close so many times.

@Rookreviewcom @lachesisq These guys, like Nepo and Fabi, take the opportunities for granted. They say they are going back. But life doesn't always work out that way. Only eight players in the whole world qualify, and there is ZERO guarantee Nepo or Fabi will ever appear in a candidates again.

I am proud to announce that we will launch our second team for the upcoming FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Team Championship in Hongkong! This team represents an idea that is central to our vision: Chess United Our goal is clear - to bring together players from different continents, generations, and backgrounds, showing that chess has the power to connect the world beyond borders. The first confirmed players of the team are: @vishy64theking @GMJoseMartinez @jordenvforeest @Tunde_OD @Tu_se_se During the championship we will also highlight a cause that is very important to us: the promotion of chess for people with disabilities. Chess is one of the most inclusive activities in the world - a discipline where talent, determination, and strategic thinking matter more than physical limitations. More team members will be revealed soon. Stay tuned. #ChessUnited

Ian Nepomniachtchi chooses "the guy with the same name," Jan-Krzysztof Duda, as his opponent in the Playoffs! He mentions that he wanted to choose Vincent, but it would mean that he would potentially play Magnus in the next round!

⚠️ WARNING: This post describes a death on a mountain & negligent homicide charge Mountaineer Thomas Plamberger, 39, is facing a negligent homicide trial after his girlfriend, Kerstin Gurtner, 33, froze to death on Austria's highest peak, Grossglockner, in January last year. Prosecutors in Innsbruck allege Plamberger left Kerstin "exhausted, hypothermic and disoriented" just 150 feet below the summit while temperatures plunged to minus 20C. Prosecutors claim Plamberger, who was the experienced guide for the tour, made several errors, including starting the ascent late & failing to carry sufficient emergency equipment. Webcam images reportedly showed two head torches before only one light was seen moving away hours later. The indictment states Plamberger left Kerstin unprotected & failed to make an emergency call immediately. His defense lawyer denies the allegations, insisting it was a "tragic, fateful accident" & that Plamberger turned away to get help. Rescue teams found Kerstin's body the following morning. Plamberger's trial is due to begin in February, where he faces up to three years in jail if convicted. 🙏Please share to spread awareness ⚠️DISCLAIMER: The information shared is based on initial reports, may not be fully verified, & is presented as alleged.

Did you know that Ian Nepomniachtchi was one of the players who helped Magnus Carlsen prepare for his first World Championship match in 2013, the one in which he took the title from Vishy Anand? Getty photographer @MishaFriedman was granted access to the training camp in Norway — on the sole condition that the photos could only be released after the match was over.

One of my long-standing goals has been to expand global team chess and create more opportunities, especially for young talents, to participate in top international events. It is encouraging to see how the Rapid & Blitz team format continues to grow worldwide, including the Asian Rapid Team Championship in Hong Kong, inspired by the success of our event in Düsseldorf back in 2023. This shows that chess develops best when we create inclusive platforms for players, federations and partners across all regions. This June, Hong Kong will host the World Rapid & Blitz Team Championship - now firmly established as one of the strongest and most dynamic team events on the international chess calendar. I encourage federations, clubs, sponsors and players to follow the FIDE calendar, build teams and take part in this global momentum for chess. WR Chess Team will proudly participate and we look forward to strong competition across the board.
