Peter Svidler :“Magnus will be number one for as long as he cares to be number one… I’m not 100% sure that’s true anymore” On a podcast with Mustreader, GM Peter Svidler shared his thoughts on Magnus Carlsen and the current chess landscape. He explained that Magnus is still the best player in the world, but his dominance is no longer as untouchable as it once was. The gap is slowly closing, especially with the rise of younger players. Svidler pointed out that talents like Arjun Erigaisi and Nodirbek Abdusattorov are improving fast and already pushing toward the very top level. Because of that, he said it’s no longer just about whether Magnus wants to stay number one, but whether he can keep these new “monsters” behind him. He also pointed out the strange reality of today’s chess world, where “the World Champion and the best player” are not the same person.
