What I don't understand about Marmalade-gate is that there was a German/EU regulation (the Konfitürenverordnung) whereby the term "Marmelade" was legally reserved exclusively to a product made from citrus fruits. Non-citrus spreads must be labelled "Konfitüre". So the English "marmalade" fits the EU legal definition of "Marmelade" perfectly without addition. Aside of course from also not understanding why we continue to let the EU meddle with our language.
