Yes because choosing to root for the Yankees if you are not born into it is proof of defective character. This is less about "the gentrifier laptop class" and more about "anyone with a moral center would not willingly choose to root for the Yankees." I would personally be thrilled so many good and ethical people were moving to my city!

@mikeduncan It wouldn't be moral to be a Patriots fan, Lakers fan, Tampa Bay Lightning fan, Golden State Warriors fan, or LA Dodgers fan at this point. I feel like you're not really into sports, which is fine. Or, like a lot of Mets fans, you don't pay close attention.

Walk the streets of Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick, Ridgewood, Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, Prospect Heights. Find a baseball fan who moved to NYC as an adult. Vast majority are Mets fans.

1) Conceding transplants are Mets fan. Glad again to be correct - I do not, in fact, get tired of winning.
2) Yankees and Mets can both speak to NY. But if the Mets actually summed up the essence of NYC, we'd be a C-tier sub-metropolis, barely 1.5 boroughs, failure.

to be totally sincere for a second, i can believe that transplants become Mets fans. but i suspect they do so because the culture of the Mets was more attractive to them, and part of the attraction was precisely that Mets fandom involves a greater degree of psychic commitment: the specifically New York character of loving something ugly, enduring inconvenience, and submitting yourself to one big collective neurosis. people who want to become New Yorkers, become Mets fans. And they're right to do so.
