Today is International Day of Zero Waste. Globally, about 1 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year according to @UN and much of this waste starts at home and on farms like ours. However, this “waste” can also be an opportunity. One practical and climate-smart solution is #BlackSoldierFly farming as demonstrated by #HatchesLtd’s BSF project supported by @aBiDevt . They have managed to assist @KCCAUG in handling the waste problem in Greater Kampala as they collect waste from Nakawa, Mukono and Nakasero Markets and feed it to Black Soldier flies that turn it into #organicfertiliser. Caption: Hatches Ltd's Douglas Mutungi. Look out for full interview on our pages this week. #LimaSmart #aBiGrasp #WeAreaBi #Zerowaste #Circularity #ClosingTheLoop

Saturday is a farm day, and we are still debunking agricultural myths to foster #ClimateSmartAgriculture. MYTH 3: “Soil organic matter isn’t important” FACT: Organic matter is the backbone of healthy soils, driving the biological, chemical, and physical processes that support plant growth. It also improves water retention, nutrient availability, soil structure, and provides food for beneficial soil microorganisms that help plants access nutrients and resist diseases. ✅#LimaSmart solution: Compost crop residues and animal manure, plant cover crops like legumes or grasses during off-seasons. #WeareaBi #aBiGrasp #ClimateSmartFarming #Compost #UgandaAgriculture

Still on debunking agricultural myths MYTH 2: “Wilting usually means crops need more water” FACT: Wilting can result from various problems including root damage, diseases, nutrient deficiencies, or heat stress, not just water shortage. ✅#LimaSmart solution: Before adding water, check soil moisture levels and examine plant roots for signs of damage or diseases. Look for other symptoms like leaf discoloration, unusual growth patterns, or pest damage that might indicate non-water-related problems. #LimaSmart #WeareaBi #aBiGrasp

Misleading agricultural beliefs are holding farmers back by driving practices that degrade soils, slash productivity, and leave farms vulnerable to climate shocks. To clear the path towards climate resilience, this week we are debunking common agricultural myths and suggesting sustainable practices for #climatesmartfarming. MYTH 1: “More fertilizer always means higher yields” FACT: Excessive fertilizer use can actually reduce yields by burning plant roots, disrupting the soil's nutrient balance, and creating nutrient imbalances. ✅ #LimaSmart solution: Adopt precision fertilizer application—apply the right type, at the right rate, in the right place, and at the right time. Use slow-release to match crop demand and minimize waste. #LimaSmart #aBiGRASP #WeareaBi

Good seed matters #ClimateChange is a daily reality to farmers in Uganda. Unpredictable rainfall, prolonged droughts and rising temperatures are increasingly testing how crops survive, perform and deliver reliable yields. The response to these pressures must start with seeds. aBi Development in partnership with @equator_seeds is supporting smallholder farmers in Northern Uganda to access resilient and climate-smart seeds that maintain productivity under climate stress, use water and other inputs more efficiently, and reduce climate-related crop losses. #LimaSmart #WeAreaBi #aBiGRASP #ClimatSmartFarming

#Farming thrives when there is #healthysoil that stores water, cycles nutrients and supports resilient crops even in changing climates. Here’s how to nurture it: ✅ Add compost – Turn farm & kitchen waste into rich organic matter ✅ Use cover crops – Plants like legumes or grasses protect bare soil from erosion, fix atmospheric nitrogen, suppress weeds, and improve water retention, especially critical during dry spells. ✅ Rotate crops – to break pest cycles & boost soil fertility naturally ✅ Adopt integrated pest & nutrient management – to ensure optimal fertilizer and pesticide allocation, enabling precise interventions and empowering farmers to avoid unnecessary and costly treatments. @aBiDevt , through the Green Agrifood Systems Program (#GRASP), is promoting these practices to strengthen smallholder resilience, boost yields, and build a competitive, sustainable agribusiness sector in Uganda. Healthy #soil is the foundation of #foodsecurity, #climate resilience, and farmer prosperity. Join us in putting soil health at the heart of Uganda’s agricultural future. #LimaSmart #WeAreaBi #aBiGRASP

EUDR compliance: Earning the coffee dollars while safeguarding the environment Numbers don’t lie. Coffee is one of Uganda’s leading foreign exchange earners, having brought in UGX9 trillion last year, according to figures from @MAAIF_Uganda. Everyone is literally smelling the coffee and farmlands are being cleared to cash in. But don’t think of clearing forests to plant coffee as it won’t be marketable! Since 1990, Uganda has lost nearly 48% of its forest cover, with an estimated 38,000 hectares cleared each year, much of it driven by agricultural expansion. At the same time, deforestation contributes at least 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, prompting stronger action from international markets. This is not climate smart agriculture. One of the most recent significant responses is the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). Under this regulation, commodities such as coffee, cocoa, and timber can only access the EU market if they are proven to be deforestation-free and legally produced. For instance, coffee grown on land cleared after December 2020 will not qualify to access EU markets. For Uganda, where the EU remains the largest coffee market, this regulation is already reshaping how the sector prepares for global trade. However, the answer isn’t to stop farming, but to farm smarter and more sustainably. aBi Development Ltd, in partnership with the former Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), has played a critical role in supporting coffee value chain actors to prepare for EUDR compliance. This includes engagement on traceability systems, legality requirements, and practical pathways for farmers and exporters to demonstrate deforestation-free production. Crucially, the support goes beyond awareness. In 2024, through the aBi EUDR Compliance Fund, the organisation allocated UGX 16 billion to the coffee sub-sector to support EUDR compliance efforts for instance through farmer registration and geo-location. Thanks to this and other efforts, we have seen an increase in coffee production and earnings (8.9 million bags worth $2.5 billion up from 6.1 million bags worth $1.5 billion the previous year) as opposed to initial fears that EUDR compliance would affect Uganda’s coffee sector. This is #LimaSmart agriculture at work — aligning climate-smart practices with market demands, protecting forests while sustaining farmer incomes, and positioning Uganda’s coffee sector for a resilient, compliant, and globally competitive future. #LimaSmart #WeAreABi #aBiGRASP

What if farming was no longer at the mercy of seasons, unpredictable weather and escalating pest pressure but rather a well-planned and controlled system? This is the promise of #greenhousefarming. A #greenhouse is simply a protected growing space where farmers create the right environment for crops to thrive while protected from harsh weather, pests and diseases. Inside, plants precisely get water, light, nutrients and temperature they need and when they need it. Greenhouse farming directly answers today’s biggest agricultural challenges including #climateunpredictability, low yields and rising input costs because droughts, heavy rains, pests and heatwaves no longer affect crops. #LimaSmart #WeAreaBi #aBiGRASP #ClimateSmartAgriculture

What if your farm didn’t have to wait for the #rain? Yes, the rains are here and farmers are busy preparing gardens and sowing. But due to #climatechange, the seasons are becoming unpredictable! #Irrigation is the lifeline Uganda’s farms can’t afford to ignore. When rains fail and they increasingly do—irrigation keeps crops growing, pastures green, and milk production steady throughout even the longest dry spells. With irrigation systems like drip, sprinkler and furrow, water goes exactly where it’s needed which means less waste, less soil erosion, and smarter use of resources especially when paired with #fertigation, which delivers nutrients directly to crops through the water system. The payoff are yields which are 2 to 5 times higher than rain-fed farming for vegetables, fruits, and fodder thus securing both food on the table and feed for livestock. Through the Green Agrifood Systems Program (#GRASP), aBi is supporting smallholder farmers and agribusinesses to adopt irrigation as a core #climatesmart practice. Controlled water management through irrigation also lets farmers plan planting and harvesting with confidence, enabling year-round production—without pushing into #fragileecosystems like #wetlands. In a changing climate, irrigation is about resilience, reliability, and building stronger #agribusinesses that thrive no matter the weather. That's farming smart. #LimaSmart #WeAreaBi #aBiGRASP #ClimatesmartAgriculture #UgandaAgriculture
