I've been sick with ME/CFS & related comorbidities for 20 years and noticed it's really hard to find any reliable info on treatment beyond pacing recommendations
So I built a treatment database for our community, covering ME, LC, POTS, MCAS, FM, SFN

In colon tissue of #Long Covid subjects, Spike positive regions revealed significant changes in the transcriptome.
Similar to tumor signaling and Crohn's disease gene expressions. Overall, chronic inflammation transcripts dominated these spike positive regions in LC samples.

What is persistent #SARS-CoV-2 Spike doing in gut tissue in situ?
In our new preprint, we used spatial transcriptomics, RNAscope, GeoMx DSP, and multiplex IF to investigate biopsies from #LongCOVID
The immune dysfunction happen on spike + regions of LC.

We found that Spike⁺ regions show:
• immune cell remodeling
• suppressed chemokine signalling
• epithelial stress programs
In LC tissue, these regions display transcriptional signatures resembling tumorigenesis, Crohn’s disease–associated pathways, and #chronic #inflammation

In this collaborative study funded by @polybioRF, we have detected gene signatures specific of Long covid tissue regions. Persistent SARS-CoV-2 antigen is not biologically inert in tissue, in fact super active with both immune suppression and activation.

We have sequenced the microbiome of six Brazilian biomes: #Amazon, #AtlanticForest, #Cerrado, #Caatinga, #Pampa, and #Pantanal. This massive effort, led by my colleagues @Embrapa and my lab at @JCVenterInst had the goal to develop a deeper understanding of the foundation of our ecosystems. Our hope? To use this knowledge to help preserve & regenerate ecological systems that are failing.

Summer Internships ✨
This summer at #JCVI, students in #STEM are exploring science in the areas of human biology, infectious diseases, oceanography and synthetic biology. My laboratory has 7 interns and the projects range from #inflammation, #LongCovid, #tissuepathogenesis. We are lively lab that is not going to back down from what the government is doing. This is only possible due to funding from @prebysfound and @polybioRF empowering the opportunities of these young scientists and the experiments they are doing! #JCVI #UCSD #FutureScientists

🦠 #Biofilms in the Mouth impacting the whole body?
In our lab, we focus on oral pathogens with systemic implications, specially inducing chronic #inflammation. One such microbe is Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa)—a key player in periodontal disease and, as our work showed, a significant colonizer of biomaterials like #titanium implants.
🔍 In our earlier study (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC34…), we developed a model demonstrating Aa's strong preference for rough titanium oxide surfaces. Building on that, we designed a therapeutic approach to control Aa locally and systemically (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC50…).
Biofilms can lead to microbial migration into blood vessels which can impact other tissues. Better therapeutics need to focus on tissue pathogenesis with biofilm derived microbes.
