Very few films made in Toronto are actually about Toronto. Even fewer manage to capture something true about this city. It’s a huge feat and KC did that with her first feature. She is the future. Make sure you see this movie.

The minimum wage literature has completely changed in the 2020s. Almost all evidence point to the econ 101 model being correct.
NBER@nberpubs

California’s $20 fast-food minimum wage raised restaurant prices approximately 3–4 percent. Other prices including food-at-home exhibit no differential movement, pointing to wage-driven pass-through, from @jeffreypclemens, Olivia Edwards, Jonathan Meer, and Joshua D. Nguyen nber.org/papers/w34990

@alz_zyd_ There is one thing here that is true, which is that the "academic-ese" impossible to read writing is worse in the humanities because the definitions are not precise. "Eigenvalue" and "liminal" are both not common, but 100% agreement among readers about the meaning of the former.

In the modern academic humanities, there are a bunch of words that sound cool but mean nothing, like "liminal". Like, if you say "Eataly lies in the liminal space between restaurant and grocery store", the word "liminal" literally means nothing, but sounds really cool

In general I hate the rule that laptops/phones are banned for graduate students from seminars for several reasons: 1. If the speaker is not relevant/presenting well — let the market decide where attention is allocated 2. Sometimes I can only engage with parts of a presentation

Apparently my brain can't process Italian opera as music!? It's intermission at an (I'm told) very good performance of La bohème and I could barely tell that they're singing and not just talking in a funny voice. Had a great time at German operas in the past

An exercise: explain why you think Starmer failed while Carney is succeeding, despite being superficially very similar on paper.

Enshittification is a useful term when applied narrowly. There's a real dynamic, especially in tech, of "provide an amazing user experience to grow, then pivot to extracting value once you're huge" The problem is when enshittification is used as "anything I personally dislike"
Joe@JoePostingg

Enshittification is the fakest thing ever. Computers are faster. Running shoes give you more energy return. You can get macro friendly junk food at the grocery store. There is so much good in the world.

shouldn't have named it enshittification then
Anders Sandberg@anderssandberg

@AndyMasley Enshittification used to mean something - how platform-customer-user chains have misaligning incentives. Now people use it for anything they think is getting worse. I refuse to use the word in the second sense to describe its loss of meaning, but it would be very meta.

@quasicoh my impression is that at the frontier of pure math what counts as novel or important is largely a matter of taste. not unlike which indie band has a fresh sound

I don't think research mathematicians' extremely high standards for novelty are particularly useful as benchmarks for AI progress. In real life, even just reapplying well-known methods from one field to an adjacent field is often enough to make huge progress.
