@batcountry1980 I'm the annoying sod in the corner wanting to choose Buzzcocks or Magazine or The Ramones or any number of similar vintage debut records that mean a lot more to me. Pistols meant nothing to me (unlike PIL) and The Clash needed to make Sandinista for me to fall in love with them.

Imagine you’re sitting in the boozer with your pal, and a question like “who had the better debut album, Clash or the Pistols?” came up. It would be pretty strange if you were asked it, answered, and then the person just got up and left in silence. That happens on here a lot, though. Questions are fine, they spark music debate, which is one of the reasons a lot of us are on here. But to not give your opinion, and/or wilfully ignore all the answers, is just bizarre.

@EllenFWalker Well there's Bait and Enys Men, although that's Cornish film making, rather than British film making.

The British used to make films with significant artistic risk like The Wicker Man and Penda's Fen now we make crap with names like "the bountiful pilgrimage of mr harold pettyfeather" and "the naughty penguin project"
Catherine Warr@HiddenYorkshire

Watching Educating Rita. God we used to make some good stuff. Now everything is 'heartwarming' and starring Jim Broadbent and Imelda Staunton with an indie acoustic soundtrack and a plot about a dysfunctional community overcoming hurdles together and called The Great Scruffthorpe Choir Project

@IrkthePurists But Dexys were clearly not a one hit wonder. (This is the example of such calling out I've just seen in my feed).

It’s impossible to casually refer to someone as a one-hit wonder these days without some bore popping up to say ‘Actually, Girl I Need Your Loving Tonight got to number 26 the following April’.

@TheFourthBardo @anon_opin Well I think they lost a lot when Will died and while Boss Drum has some good songs on it, it hasn't the soul of En-tact. It's not people being sniffy, they were genuinely a lesser band at that point. 1987 Strange Days Dream is still my fav Shamen song.

@anon_opin Same thing with The Shamen, they brought out some great music in the late 80s and early 90s, then they got to no.1 with Eberneezer Goode, probably the most subversive novelty song ever, but it changed a lot of their audience's perspective of them, not in a good way.

Giant Steps by The Boo Radleys is possibly the finest album made by any British group in the 1990s, and yet all most people remember them for is that bloody awful Wake Up song, the worst thing they ever did. Shame.

Another example of how the culture wars are so often fought on the ground of utter phantasmic bullshit. Ensuring every 14-15 year old school pupil has read Milton, Hobbes, Book of Common Prayer etc is as absurd now as it would have been 100 years ago
James 🇬🇧 👑@TypeForVictory

Every British child should leave school with a working knowledge of the KJV bible, Shakespeare, Homer, the Book of Common Prayer, Beowulf, Milton, Chaucer, at least one victorian novelist, and core political texts (Magna Carta, Hobbes, Smith). They're core to everything else.

@Paytress Sandinista is way more interesting and a hundred times more influential, but it's a game of opinions I guess. Nothing on Sandinista screams 'Hey, we want to be a big US-friendly rock band' though.

@itaintwhywhywhy The guy opposite me at uni owned only two albums - the Led Zeppelin one with Stairway to Heaven on it and one from Marillion - that he played on rotation, so F them. Pink Floyd had only one good song - Set the controls..., but at least it was great. Queen? Nah, not for me.

As a child of 70s punk, I have softened over the years to many bands I point blank refused to listen to (Led Zep, Pink Floyd and other rock god behemoths) Apart from Queen. I've always fucking hated Queen and always will until my dying day. And MUSE can fuck right off as well.
Mike Scott@IrkthePurists

Why do so many people despise Queen? I’m not a massive fan myself, but the hatred just seems off the charts. It can’t still be because of Sun City.

@johnbarrett2468 Surely no adult male still has a copy of this. It was barely acceptable at school back in the day. We only pretended to like it cos the girls all fancied Adam. 'ere, pass us the trainer whitener' 😂
