@xzmacabrex I've said it elsewhere but I think the better word to use would be obsession. I've done SLÀA groups on Fantasy Addiction (which should be obsession) and that really feels like the answer to this topic. It's also less gendered and doesn't target SWers in the slightest.

What IS harmful is spreading misinformation. The people saying porn addiction isn't real aren't just SWers, but doctors and neuroscientists. Ignoring the fact that "porn addiction" is largely a right wing grift and MOST PEOPLE who are talking about it are making money off of it. The fact that there is no scientific backing for it, and there is no "treatment" for it either, should be a big red flag when listening to people talk about the dangers of porn addiction. The reason why it isn't real is that there are factors into it. Can sexual compulsions exist? Yes. Does that make them an "addiction"? No. Should we be spreading misinformation and a false narrative that turns porn into something bad and takes the onus off of the people who are avoiding their partners, friends, or real life and using "porn" as an excuse to do it? NO! Sexual compulsive behaviors usually overlap with something else happening. Calling it a "porn addiction" and not addressing the actual, tangible behavioral problems that led to this obsession with porn is unhelpful. Likewise, imagine trying to get help for your sexual compulsive behavior, googling it, and finding a bunch of grifters offering courses that you have to pay for in order to get "help"? Spouting this rhetoric only pushes the narrative that sex & sexuality is bad, and pushes us towards higher rates of censorship, which will absolutely effect findom as well!! Making pornography out to be some negative, bad thing is actually a very anti-feminist narrative. Who reigns in porn? Women. (not to mention the large overlap with other marginalized identities, like queer women, disabled women, and WOC/Black women, not to mention how those identities overlap). It is extremely puritanical to treat porn as some ethereal object that exists within the ether and ignore the real, human people who create it. It doesn't just exist, it's media that is created by people - real people. And treating it as an object erases the very human, real, (and as pointed out above - the sometimes marginalized people), who would be harmed by taking it away with no thought to who the people are that make it to survive. And you can poohpooh that all you want, but we live in late stage capitalism, babe. and if you want to pull the rug out from under people who are doing SW to survive, I would call that monstrous. You aren't a "villian", you're a lemming. Spouting SWERF rhetoric while you benefit on the very thing you're stating you're against. You're not a villain, you're a fool. You embarrass yourself.

one of the interesting things about the way porn addiction- a concept invented by christofascists as an excuse for rape- has entered the mainstream is it's entered into this sort of pop psych mindset in which literally all forms of pleasure must be considered public health issues
