Inspired by our scheduled @Space_Station link up with the Crown Princess of Sweden, I set my camera lens on my mother’s home country (I have dual citizenship with Sweden!). With the inclination of the ISS orbit, we never pass directly over Scandinavia, but I was lucky enough to catch some aurora dancing in that neighborhood, just a few days before our call. Heja Sverige! The timelapse shows city night lights but settings optimized for aurora, air glow, stars. :06 Norway appears at right edge of screen :10 Sweden appears at right edge of screen :19 Sweden in center of screen :28 Moscow appears on right of screen :37 Moscow in center of screen In the first image, you can see part of each of the Scandinavian countries – Sweden is in the center of the image (looks like some clouds over Southern Sweden, so lights look a bit blurry there), the air glow of the atmosphere at night, and the aurora (and the edge of an ISS solar array). In the second image, you can see parts of Norway and Sweden (again a bit blurry in Southern Sweden due to clouds). The large bright spot in lower right area of image is Stockholm. Both photos were taken on March 11, and the timelapse taken on March 13.

When this is over, the western part of NATO will never be the same. Spain, England, France and Italy have sold us out, as they too often have a history of doing. Eastern European nations are the heart of NATO. They spend money on defense, know how to fight and love the US. France particularly deserves fault and blame. From supporting China and Russia at the UN to denying Americans overflight rights, they’re doing what they’ve always done - showing weakness, while cutting deals with terrorists. (The reason the US has a Marine Corps and Navy is unlike France, we refused to pay a ransom to the Barbary Pirates. France is always happy to cut a deal.) Wars have unintended consequences as nations show their true colors. NATO will never be the same, and Western European weakness and acquiescence is the cause.

@rjessing @sashameetsrus The Great Novgorod predates the Kiev Rus. Besides, Novgorod means "new town", for it was the second capital of Russia way before Kiev.

It is hilarious how russians keep talking about "our hemisphere", "our cultural sphere" when they can hardly get their own economy working. It is as if the Turkey sniffing old Ottoman dreams and attempting to claim Egypt as a natural part. I would fear a Brazil or an Indonesia with a global ambition much more.

Indeed, Russia is very far from the superpower it once was. It is the little brother of the BRICS family. Indonesia is 55th on the global innovation index, Brazil #52, India #38 - they have 9, 18, and 70 unicorns. Russia #60 and 0. Indonesia, known as a commodity economy has 58% diversified economy (beyond commodity, infra) and Russia 45%. Brazil and South Africa spends 4-6% of GDP on health, Russia 3.5% - at par with Indonesia.

The US and China are the only two superpowers. Russia’s economy is smaller than Italy’s, and a large portion of its GDP ends up in the offshore accounts of Putin’s cronies. Europe can and will deter Russia. Russia is not even able to progress in Ukraine, a very poor country.

A lot of funny words in that statement. I believe the US government are the ones entertaining and negotiating on behalf of the (ex-) communists in the Kremlin.
