@HankBascom @ryanhammer09 With a r16 slaughter in ‘22 to the Netherlands I’d say being competitive in that game should be the floor for a home World Cup w supposedly a much more developed roster age-wise
So yes, if we get bounced in the new r32 or get slaughtered in r16 again I say that’s a failure

I think people who focus on the 9 ERA figure fundamentally misunderstand that you’d use this guy as a closer w 0 variance
Any 2/3 run games in the 8th or later become 100% wins vs 93% wins (huge if they’re available 8/10 games)

The zero variance is more important than the ERA. You win every game you lead by N+1 runs with N innings remaining. Empirical question how often such leads are lost, but at a minimum seems +EV to use a roster spot to carry in playoffs. And *tons* of second-order positive effects.

Weird question. Realistically how valuable would a pitcher who only and ever gives up one run each inning he pitches would be? Like he gives up a homer to the first batter then 1-2-3 rest of the inning
