How could tiny breakthroughs in aging science change U.S. GDP and population growth? What’s the economic value of making 41 the new 40, or 65 the new 60? How many lives could we create or save if we could slow reproductive or brain aging by just 1 year? What would billions of healthier hours be worth to the economy, if we assume no change in the age of retirement? I spent the last two years obsessing over the design, research, and execution of this project. The result is a book upcoming with Harvard University Press, a preprint, and—maybe your favorite part—an interactive simulation tool that lets you input your own timelines and assumptions for specific breakthroughs in aging bio, then see the ROI in terms of US population & GDP growth. From @RickEcon and Jason DeBacker—the economists who co-developed the open-source, macro model that made this project possible—to extensive comments by @tylercowen, @sapinker, Richard Freeman, @NDHendrix, @ebudish, @elidourado, @geochurch, @jasoncrawford as well as interviews with 102 scientists (!) and countless iterations with award-winning designer Giorgia Lupi and the @pentagram team, we built something we hope will be a benchmark for how scientists, economists, designers, philosophers, entrepreneurs and storytellers can come together to paint, fund, and build different flourishing futures for our species. I couldn’t be more excited to share this. It’s the start of an open and evolving project—the labor and product of love, obsession, and unrelenting care. I hope you have fun playing with our simulation tool — and if you do, please share!

I’d like to introduce you to Death Clock—an AI-powered longevity app that I’ve been advising for the last 6 months. Health apps are notoriously difficult to grow: they are single-player utilities that resonate most with older audiences. However, I worked with the founder @brentfranson and we did some simple things that made the experience social and drove the cost of acquisition down to pennies...

In March 2024, we hosted our inaugural D.C. Fly-In, bringing together industry leaders, academics, investors, and policymakers. Despite the challenges of navigating a potential government shutdown, we successfully showcased the importance of representing the longevity science industry on Capitol Hill. This achievement was made possible by our incredible A4LI sponsors and community, who recognized the critical role of this field. We were honored to introduce our Longevity Science Caucus on Capitol Hill for the first time, with Co-Chairs Congressmen Paul Tonko and Gus Bilirakis delivering impactful opening remarks at the Longevity Science Briefing. Join us in shaping the future of healthier, longer lives at our 2025 D.C. Summit, happening April 28th–30th. With a newly appointed Health Cabinet supportive of longevity science and a renewed national push to make the United States a global leader in scientific innovation, 2025 offers a unique window of opportunity. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this transformative moment—learn more at a4li.org/dc-summit-2025/!

The success of AI applied to drug discovery is being decided by a number of clinical trials. So far, the results are lackluster. Why? For AI to have a transformational effect in drug discovery, training data must come from living mammals. (🧵1/9)

Shouldn’t aging be part of drug discovery for diseases of aging? gordian.bio/blog/introduci… Gordian exists to move therapeutic testing from plastic wells and young mice into a living environment with all the complexity present in patients with age-related disease. We’re now sharing results showing how pooled in vivo screening can make highly accurate physiological predictions and find novel treatments for diseases of aging 🧵1/15

The Alliance for Longevity Initiatives (A4LI) is thrilled to announce the newest addition to our team, Brenda Eap, PhD, who joins us as our Vice President of Operations and Partnerships. Brenda brings with her a wealth of expertise and dedication to our mission of advancing legislation and policies that promote healthy human lifespan. Brenda’s PhD training at the @BuckInstitute for Research on Aging under John C. Newman, MD, PhD investigated age and sex-dependent changes to ketone body metabolism using a multi-omics approach. Her work also helped lay the foundation for Buck’s first-ever human clinical trials testing ketone supplementation to treat frailty, a key aspect of geriatric syndrome. Brenda’s enthusiasm for geroscience research and passion in advocating for making geroscience therapeutics accessible and equitable will undoubtedly play a crucial role in A4LI’s ongoing efforts to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live better for longer. Please help us extend a warm welcome to @beappbeapp!

The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has announced that they will be providing $37 million in project funding to The Thymus Rejuvenation project. Making it the first industry project to receive support through the ARPA-H Open BAA. The project, led by scientists from Thymmune Therapeutics, will focus on restoring immune function in aging and disease through thymic cell therapies. ARPA-H has funded this project in order to help advance this project towards clinical development and broaden its applications to address a broader range of clinical scenarios associated with age-related immune depletion. You can read the full announcement here: arpa-h.gov/news/thymus_re… A4LI is delighted to see ARPA-H's commitment to funding programs aimed at extending healthy human life. This groundbreaking initiative represents a significant step towards advancing longevity research and addressing age-related health challenges. We applaud ARPA-H's support for innovative solutions and eagerly anticipate their continued commitment in the years to come.
