Mark Carney says Albertans didn't vote to have a referendum. Well, Canadians didn't vote for a majority Liberal government either, yet here we are.

Keith Wilson won the debate because he made the case for Alberta’s future. Jason Kenney leaned on fear and nostalgia, but offered no concrete plan to reform Alberta’s broken position within Canada. One argued for the future. The other defended the past.

Among the most absurd assumptions in this whole surreal debate is the idea that Alberta, in the vanishingly unlikely event that it was ever permitted to detach itself from Canada, would depart with its entire current territory — including the parts with the oil. There is zero possibility of this, and even less legitimacy to it. The provinces control natural resources under the constitution of Canada — but under the constitution of Canada, and as provinces of Canada. The minute they cease to be under the constitution, they cease to enjoy any of its guarantees. If Alberta claims it is fighting for what Quebec has, wouldn’t a referendum on independence be the first step?! Asking for 301,260+ Albertans…. Note: Quebec held its second independence referendum more than three decades ago, and Alberta is only now at the stage of asking whether it is even allowed to ask the same question Quebec already asked. Twice! The math is not mathing. 🤨

If Danielle Smith announces a separtist referendum for the fall, the feds should immediately halt any further work towards a new pipeline until this question is resolved. It shouldn’t be working with a government that facilitates the potential breakup of this country.

Justice Leonard ignored the Supreme Court of Canada which said INDEPENDENCE REFERENDA DO NOT IMPACT ANYONE’S RIGHTS because they are a mere political exercise whereby even a YES vote is a mere expression of political opinion that doesn’t have the effect of amending the constitution. No impact on rights - no duty to consult. It’s not very complicated - unless you have a political axe to grind.

I see the comments: “Only 301,000?” “Maybe it’s not enough.” Stop. Right now. Lift your heads. Because here’s the truth they don’t want you hearing: the Forever Canada petition did not require canvassers or identification. They ran a feel-good paper drive with verbal nods and quick sign-ups. No ID. No registered canvassers carrying official Elections Alberta credentials. Just warm bodies and hope. And now they wave their numbers like a victory flag. If they want to brag about raw volume, they’re free to run another signature campaign tomorrow. Let them do it the hard way this time. Let them register every canvasser, verify every address, and submit to the same rigorous, independent verification process our 301,000 signatures are about to face. We’ll wait. Because this isn’t a numbers game. This is a will game. Every single one of those 301,000 names was gathered by real Albertans who stood in the cold, knocked on doors, faced the doubters, and still signed anyway. We didn’t take the easy road. We took the honest one. And when Elections Alberta finishes their verification, those signatures will stand as ironclad proof that a growing, determined movement is done asking Ottawa for permission to exist. To every one of you feeling down right now: this is not the end. This is the spark. We are not asking for scraps at the federal table anymore.
