- I appeared on Rebel News - Over the past few weeks I have begun engaging with @RebelNewsOnline an organization which is openly right wing that frequently goes after left-wing activists, ideas and struggles while portraying them in a negative light. They are known for street confrontations with activists, vilification of protests and rage-bait headlines. I have decided to engage with them for a number of reasons; for one, they are the only media covering many of the demonstrations in Montreal. Secondly, their reports are deeply revealing of right-wing narratives; for example, they routinely feature people praising Israel’s actions, calling pro-Palestine protesters terrorists, and so on. Their reports reveal how some of the right in Canada speaks, thinks and acts. Thirdly, they do occasionally give space to include left-wing perspectives. Even if these perspectives are framed in a negative light, they are broadcast, which is more than we can say about the mainstream media. The other thing is that Rebel News’ ideological standpoint is visible, transparent and upfront. Rather than pretending to be neutral, their reports state clearly where they stand. After sharing some of their content and encouraging leftists to watch it to better understand right-wing viewpoints, their journalist Alexandra Lavoie (@ThevoiceAlexa) spotted me at the Al-Quds Day protest and asked me for an interview, which I accepted. As a general rule, I do not filter media requests and honestly I don’t find Rebel News to be that different from the Journal de Montreal or similar mainstream outlets. My interview is featured at the 15-minute mark of this report and runs through to the end of the clip. They asked pointed questions, including where I stand on Al-Quds Day, what I make of Iranians who support U.S. and Israeli attacks on their country, and my views on October 7th. The interview was slightly edited, but the majority of what I said was included in the report. Rebel News’ audience seems to have found my comments entertaining, as hundreds of the comments below their video addressed what I said: 1. The attack of October 7th was predictable given the way Israel has treated Palestinians. I oppose all violence. The Green Party of Quebec and I stand for world peace. We cannot condemn the acts of October 7th while ignoring the fact that the death toll is far higher on the Palestinian side than on the Israeli side, nor the fact that Israel is occupying and continuously expanding onto Palestinian lands. 2. Labeling Hamas as a terror group is a tool that the West uses to delegitimize Palestinian leadership and to dehumanize the Palestinian people. Even here in Montreal, Rebel News defines people protesting for Palestinian rights on Al-Quds Day as "celebrating terrorism" this shows just how easily the term is thrown around and politically exploited. 3. I disagree with Iranian monarchists that Trump and Israel bombing their country is a good thing. They are entitled to their opinion, but I disagree with it. 4. I support Al-Quds Day, although it has a complex history; it was created to oppose Israeli occupation of Jerusalem. 5. I disagree with Conservative Party of Canada deputy leader Melissa Lantsman that special attention should be put to pursuing supposed IRGC members in Canada. Canada already has a strong legal system that is equipped to bring individuals who have committed crimes to justice. If anything, we should be pressuring the RCMP to investigate members of the IDF who may have committed war crimes in Gaza. As expected, the framing of Rebel News is right wing; they equated marching for Palestine to supporting terrorism. This is to be expected given their ideological orientation. I hope that my comments will lead to reflection amongst supporters of Israel and Trump and that at least some people will begin to question the pro-war narrative. In the meantime, I will continue explaining my point of view on these matters to any media outlet that will publish my comments, regardless of their ideological or political framing. This is something almost no mainstream politicians will do. That dynamic only leads to more polarization. I will continue speaking out to any media outlet that will listen.
