@Daidalos2047 I’m not sure on ZBD-04A control panels, but in my experience the driver controls the exhaust smoke from his control panel whereas the commander and/or gunner control the smoke grenade dischargers from their respective control panels.

@AFVRec_ Something I want to note here: Heavy white smoke means it was already doing exhaust-fuel injection as a functional demonstration. Either the mechanics did something wrong when wiring that smoke wall button with smoke grenades or the control panel of both sits on the same tableu

Chinese ZBD-04A IFV on a demonstration exercise accidentally discharges a smoke grenade into a mound full of observers, likely officers and politicians.

@TongLianheng I think it was a malfunction given that only a single grenade fired, generally smoke grenades are fired in banks (left or right) at the commanders discretion. At least in my experience anyway.

@AFVRec_ Looks AI, that looks nothing like how smoke grenades explode. Smoke grenades are designed to shoot into the air and explode in air to create a smoke curtain. That footage looks like a simulation of a mortar round.

I did, on multiple vehicle platforms. I’ve never trained or seen anyone trained on the pinpoint aiming of AFV smoke grenade dischargers, you get contacted and want cover, you fire either left or right banks (or both) and reverse. You don’t sit waiting trying to accurately aim a system which isn’t supposed to be accurately aimed, if you want pinpoint smoke you call for fire.

@AFVRec_ @FunktionError Yes they are. Of course they are. And its quite simple. Range...speed of vehicle. There is a whole training manual on it

@erob_po @a_la_verga_bro At what distance? If you discharge smoke grenades in an AFV they’re just going to go in a rough direction in front of you, they aren’t an aimed weapon, you’d have to be extremely lucky (like this commander) to pinpoint hit a target with them.

@AFVRec_ @a_la_verga_bro What the fuck are you talking about. They’re angled slightly right of the orientation of the turret. If the turret is pointed forward, there’s a crowd on the right and you fire the smoke, it’s going to go right.

@Ethead @FunktionError Yes but the distance is a rough estimate to make whilst moving and you’re just gonna sort of hit a rough area

@AFVRec_ @FunktionError Well they fly in a specific angle, do they? So you could aim by steering the vehicle in the right direction

Are you feeling the "tension"??? Lots in defence media about Armd Veh Track Tension...so what is it? #tanktechnology While the transmission delivers torque and speed, it's the "running gear" that transfers this to the ground.

BVP-M80A during the Yugoslav war, I believe it belonged to Republika Srpska (VRS), commonly known as the Bosnian Serb army. Clearly the crew supported Manchester United, which at the time won the league in ‘92, ‘93 and ‘95, as well as the FA Cup in ‘94.

8/ Sadly the CVED project was shelved, although as most would agree it was ahead of its time. End of thread.

1/ Short thread on the Rooikat CVED (Combat Vehicle Electric-Drive Demonstrator) is a South African technology demo based on the Rooikat armoured recce vehicle. This thread was made in collaboration with @ShombeReport who I recommend you follow him.

7/ One of the interesting features of the CVED is the ability to pivot turn as shown in the first video, this is extremely useful for a wheeled recce vehicle, where it is an absolute neccesity to be able to get out of contact quickly.

6/ With the main engine switched off, the CVED can operate silently using the electric motors, albeit with reduced power and range (12km at 45km/h), nevertheless in the thick bush in which the Rooikat operates and dominates, this would be extremely useful. Especially given that most accounts from the South African Border War explain that the South African troops could hear the loud engines and tracks of the FAPLA T-55’s before they could see them.

5/ The MTU engine upgrade and the electric motors raised power to 603bhp and torque to 2250nm giving the CVED an impressive 0-60km/h time of 14 seconds.

4/ Surprisingly the removal of the mechanical drivetrain reduced the weight by 2 tons, even with the added batteries for the motors, this reduction in weight means that appliqué armour could be fitted or extra ammunition could be carried.

3/ The vehicle had electric motors in each wheel hub, the motors are permanent magnet motors. The mechanical drivetrain was replaced by an electric-drive system. This was paired to a Mercedes-Benz OM-501LA 12 litre V6 engine modified by MTU, the engine is commonly found in the Mercedes-Benz Actros range of heavy goods vehicles.
