Catholic priests still out there saving civilization. A tradition unlike any other.
The Aramaic Wire ܣܘܪܝܐ@AramaicWire

HOW ONE PRIEST SINGLEHANDEDLY RESCUED THE WORLD'S LARGEST COLLECTION OF ARAMAIC MANUSCRIPTS FROM THE ISLAMIC STATE. In 2007, threatening letters arrived at the Dominican monastery in Mosul. Each envelope contained a broken cross & a bullet. Father Najeeb Michaeel's name was on a hit list. Instead of leaving, his work began. Every morning before dawn, he dressed in civilian clothes and drove his old car to Mosul, moving the monastery's manuscripts 30km away. Alone, box by box, a multi-month operation. The collection dated back to the 9th century. When ISIS ways days away from taking Mosul in August 2014, he did it again. By an act of God, within weeks of ISIS' descent on Mosul, he moved the ancient documents. Two cars full of manuscripts & 16th-century books. Aramaic manuscripts from the 9th century: Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Yezidi. A millennium of civilization in the Nineveh Plain. They drove east through the night. At a checkpoint, a young girl pointed at the horizon. When they cleared the last checkpoint, Najeeb said: "I think the Virgin Mary had a hand to protect us." When he returned to Mosul after liberation, the monastery had been used as a weapons warehouse. The library was destroyed. The clock tower, donated by the Empress of France in 1876, the first clock in Iraq, was stripped and stolen. A gallows stood where the altar once was. In 2019, the Church made him Archbishop of Mosul. He now oversees 8,000+ digitized manuscripts from 105 collections across Iraq, Turkey, and Iran. He saved our history. Remember his name & pray for his continued work.

Yes, he really said that. Yesterday Vice President JD Vance criticized Pope Leo XIV for not knowing enough theology: "I think it's very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology ... If you’re going to opine on matters of theology, you’ve got to be careful, you’ve got to make sure it’s anchored in the truth," he said, at a Turning Point conference. One of the many, many, ironies about that statement is that it came in response to Pope Leo's comments about war and peace and, specifically, the concept of "just war," which originated with St. Augustine. As many have already noted, when the Vice President was making his comments, Pope Leo XIV, a member of the Augustinian Order, and twice Prior General of the Augustinians before his election as Pope, was visiting the hometown of St. Augustine, then called "Hippo," now in Annaba, a town in modern-day Algeria. For good measure, Pope Leo XIV, the man critiqued for insufficient theological education, earned not only a master's degree in divinity, but also licentiate and a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. JD Vance's recent conversion to Catholicism is beside the point, because many converts are of course not only highly intelligent (and learned in theology) but faithful and energetic Catholics. We rejoice over everyone entering the church. What most of us do not rejoice over, however, is a deadly combination of inaccuracy and hubris. Pace, Vice President Vance, but the current war in Iran is not a just war under Catholic doctrine. You can hear that from church leaders from across the theological spectrum, from Archbishop Timothy Broglio, the head of the military vicariate and former head of the @USCCB, to Cardinal Robert McElroy, Archbishop of Washington who holds doctorates in both theology and political science. You can look all that up online. Suffice to say, the Vice President doesn't seem to understand the tenets of just war. Nor does he seem to understand the fundamental position of the church, which is for peace. "War is always a defeat for humanity," as St. John Paul II said. If that authority isn't enough, then turn to Jesus who said, "Blessed are the peacemakers," not "Blessed are the warmongers." And after the Resurrection, the Risen Christ says to the frightened disciples not "Vengeance is mine" but "Peace be with you." Incidentally, the day before, the Vice President said that the Pope (and the Vatican) should stick to teaching about morality, also seeming to forget that war and peace are profoundly moral issues. For his part, Pope Leo was focused yesterday on his spiritual father, St. Augustine. After what seemed like an emotional visit to Hippo, he celebrated Mass at the Basilica of St. Augustine in Annaba. During his homily he said, "The primary task of pastors as ministers of the Gospel is therefore to bear witness to God before the world with one heart and one soul, not permitting our concerns to lead us astray through fear, nor trends to undermine us through compromise." Amen. Let's all continue to pray for the Holy Father as he works for peace. (Image: Pope Leo XIV prays at the archeological ruins of Hippo, home of St. Augustine, in current-day Algeria. CNS photo).

Oof. Sorry. Catholic priest here. There have been plenty of bad popes. Some weak, some cowardly, some indulgent and immoral. And every single one them was a fallen human and sinner too. But there have been some real heroes too. I’ve got my faves.

As a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 40 years and a past Grand Knight, I have mixed feelings about the recent message posted by the KofC. I appreciate it as a sincere call to prayer for the Pope. At the same time, as an organization rooted in Christian unity and brotherhood, I had hoped it would also include a request for prayers for President Trump. This would have made the message feel more balanced and fully reflective of Christian charity toward all.

Knights of Columbus
Statement From Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly: In recent days, many Catholics and other people of goodwill have been deeply disappointed by the disparaging comments directed at Pope Leo XIV by the President of the United States. The Successor of Saint Peter is not a politician — he is the Vicar of Christ, entrusted with proclaiming the Gospel and shepherding souls. The Knights of Columbus has always stood in solidarity with the Holy Father, recognizing in him a spiritual father who calls the world not to division, but to unity, not to conflict, but to peace. In this moment, we reaffirm that commitment with clarity and conviction. At the same time, we recognize that faithful Catholics can and do engage vigorously in the public square, and that nations have a right and duty to safeguard the security of their own people — always in accordance with the demands of justice and the pursuit of peace. The Church does not ask Catholics to withdraw from civic life, but to engage with and elevate it — bringing to our civic dialogue the light of truth, respect for the dignity of every human person, and a steadfast concern for the common good. Pope Leo XIV has consistently called for peace, dialogue, and restraint in a world marked by war and suffering. The Holy Father’s words are not political talking points — they are reflections of the Gospel itself. Whether one agrees or disagrees with particular policy judgments, the Holy Father’s prophetic voice deserves to be heard with respect and engaged seriously. As Knights, we are called to be men of unity, as followers of Christ and patriotic citizens. I encourage all Knights of Columbus to pray for the Holy Father, to pray for civic leaders, and to pray for peace and those working to achieve it. And let us recommit ourselves to charity in our public discourse. May we be known not for echoing the divisions of our time, but for healing them. In a moment of tension, the path forward is not louder conflict, but deeper fidelity — to truth, to charity, and to the Gospel.

The studio forced Ridley Scott to cut 45 minutes from Kingdom of Heaven (2005) for the theatrical release. It was a critical failure. The Director's Cut restored the footage and is now widely considered a masterpiece.

No Tommy, they were built to keep the other Italian city States out, and the French Empire. If you're going to criticize the Pope, please ask your Israeli handlers to at least put the effort in to giving you historically accurate propaganda.
