It pains me to admit this, but there is a natural affinity between Canada and the EU in that both of them are polyglot multicultural control-freak bureaucratic superstates formed neither by conquest nor by organic emergence from a national folk, but by economically motivated diplomatic negotiation between self-interested elites.

The property tax abolition movement in red states is a slow-motion tax revolt. There are so few people left paying taxes they're able to get together & compare notes; for most of them somewhere between 70%-90% of that is for public schools. Collapse of this system is inevitable.

A common "job" in Latin America is to buy a 2-liter Coke and some plastic cups and sell them for a quarter. Same in India, but with tea. And these are countries in the middle of the IQ distribution-- they cannot work legally here and survive without massive welfare

This is the same legal principle whereby parents who make their kids do homework and engage in intellectually stimulating extracurriculars get in trouble for taking their kids on vacations during the school year but nothing happens to kids who don’t show up 50% of the time

i’m really confused about how laws work here. if i tried to go camping in a public park tonight i’d likely be told i cannot, because it’s illegal. i’ve been cleared out of parks for stargazing after hours. a judge just ruled that berkeley has to give homeless people larger sidewalk spaces for camping than was previously determined. who qualifies for this? could i go stake out a piece of sidewalk?

I’m (1) here btw. I know it’s tempting for some of my followers to do a little vice signaling and say (3) and post that Anakin and Padme meme, but even ignoring ethical objections it just doesn’t work. It creates infectious blight and expensive legal obligations and is just bad.

Why does it seem like parenting is an endeavor where you're much more likely to fail than succeed? I feel like most people i know resent their parents on some level, which is counter-intuitive because it seems like we should be instinctually good at it?
