@EdLatimore Mostly if he dies, he dies. But usually practices during 2-a-days are scheduled for early morning and late afternoon with copious watering.

People who live in Arizona, Texas, and FL: How do you guys do high school football practice in the summer? Is it in indoors, super early or only after the sun goes down, or are y'all just like "if he dies, he dies."

Terry Crews reveals just how bad his porn addiction got “I got a day off from the set, and I could watch porn from probably 10 o’clock after my workout, 10am to 11pm at night” “It wouldn’t stop and I couldn’t stop, it was what you would call a splurge, I just couldn’t stop” “When day turns into night and you’re still watching, I knew I had a problem”

@Chronodendron @almu1968 There was an 80 something former school teacher next door to me, that used to rave about the historical research that went into her favorite Harlequins. I'm not sure many writers today do much research at all, by comparison.

Men DO read. Something interesting happened last weekend. I set up shop at a craft market. It was my most successful day selling in person so far. About halfway through, I noticed that most people who either approached the table or even looked at it were men (many glancing over their shoulders wishfully or with curiosity while their girlfriends/wives dragged them over to the stands with jewellery, beauty stuff, and knick-knacks). Only three women bought books from me, and one of them did it for her son (not her daughter, the daughter didn’t read books, she said). More importantly, the men who came over to the table knew exactly what they wanted (mostly sci-fi) and what they didn’t (romantasy, smut, feminist retellings, LGBT stuff, basically all the things trad publishing is forcing onto the shelves). One even said that he used to read a lot more before "women appropriated publishing." There was no misogyny in his tone, only sadness and a hint of resentment. The fact that I'm a woman didn't put them off, though. Not in person. And once I described my work and they realized I read the same stuff they did, they were willing to try it. Anyway, this is getting too long. TL:DR – Men read. They read quite a lot, actually, maybe even more than women, and they’re starved for new and interesting stories that aren’t distorted by narcissism/feminism, bad writing, 'reimaginings', and/or woke ideology. They want to read more. They just don't want to read more crap.

@JenRobichaux @AUSTINhokie65 Yes. I think there's something to be said about the constant monkey fingering of curriculum so that it becomes a profit center.

The data questions the benefits of dual language instruction. Although Austin ISD students scored above state averages on most 2026 STAAR tests in 3rd-8th grades... Spanish speaking students fell further behind with third grade reading at 20% meeting grade level versus 28% statewide and even larger gaps in math. kut.org/education/2026…

@NOMalreadytaken @codeofvets @PayPal Leaving that kind of balance in Paypal is always a mistake. Never leave funds sitting in there. The whole this is probably an automated response-- some kind of possible criminal transaction flag based on under the hood garbage that routinely penalizes success.

My personal bank account is through the Houston Police credit union. I can zelle payments and there isn't any transaction fees. Perhaps after you get settled back in the Nashville area, you can find a small local bank who also offers zelle. I've been doing bookkeeping for 15 years and am pretty familiar with a lot of these services. It's frustrating knowing they skim 2.5-3% before you see a penny

@Mathew_Winters1 Sad to read about poor maple. Herd behavior and instinct can be ruthless. May not have been a long life, but, you gave her the best chance possible. Animal husbandry is made of tension between what's possible and what's sustainable, economically speaking.

It isn’t always happy news to share from the farm but I recognize how many people are following along and think it’s appropriate to share some of the difficult days too. Unfortunately, Maple has passed. Not as a part of our meat program, but partly due to social behaviors amongst pigs. This is the first instance I have seen of a pig rejected by her own litter. Then any other pig she was introduced to rejected her as well. Recently she was spending time with the new breeding group (they are younger than her) and it seems that didn’t fare well either. There are a lot of animals that are born here and then leave - few get named. Bertha is the semi-Internet famous cow here, Maple was the runt Berkshire pig.

@Lawton_Braves @RealJayMikes S.C. Gwynne raises the question of who was probably a more 'successful' leader, Sitting Bull or Quanah Parker. Most folks know the name Sitting Bull, but not so much Parker's. To me, it's a strange parallel to the way Ranald Makenzie and George Custer are remembered.

Wow, you ask great questions. Much more violent at first. The Mexicans and Comanche directly competed over land, and the Comanche won through very aggressive raiding. Relations with the Anglos was peaceful for a long while, until their pioneer trains to California and Oregon started to encroach on our hunting lands. That's when we turned our attentions to them, and it became a tit-for-tat series of raids and attacks.

I've seen this clip (but not the whole movie/tv show it comes from) and it's interesting. It almost gets it right. "Comanche" comes from kɨmantsi, which was the name the Ute had for us. The Spanish heard that and changed it to "Comanche". The name itself means "enemy" or "anyone who wants to fight me". We call ourselves Nʉmʉnʉʉ, which translates to "the people" or "the human beings".
James Michael@RealJayMikes

@Lawton_Braves “Do you know what Comanche means? It means enemies forever." "Enemies with who?" "Everyone." "You know what that makes me?" "An enemy." “No. It makes me a Comanche." Fun dialogue exchange in Hell or High Water

@JenRobichaux @oltorf One kind of has to hope that a given board member has enough judgement to know when to draw a line between letting admin do their jobs, and when it's time to burn bras and flags and slit throats, in a manner of speaking.

@JenRobichaux @oltorf Bah, typo in my original reply that changed the whole meaning. Meant to say-- this shouldn't excuse a board, just because training emphasizes a mostly hands off approach. But, most taxpayers have no idea how much hands off is underlined in the training.

@JenRobichaux @oltorf I'd like to hope that any given board member would have enough heart to make objections when they feel grounds to and be willing to express their displeasure. The training emphasizes teamwork, blah blah, but every governing body needs a lower taxes crank.

Big Steve Martin fan. I remember age 10 listening to A Wild and Crazy Guy on LP with the volume so low I had my ear pressed against the speaker so I wouldn’t get caught. Anyway, I tried rewatching L.A. Story not long ago, and had to turn it off because it’s a love letter to a city that just isn’t there anymore.

Nobody in America has regularly eaten this stuff in probably 50 years at least but I nonetheless feel the need to defend Ambrosia and Watergate Salads here because they’re slop but they’re delicious diabetes inducing slop that I hope to see make a comeback in popularity

@ingelramdecoucy Had a sweet restaurant in town, local guy kept fresh Watergate salad on hand for desserts, alongside your traditional flan and such. Amazingly good food. Had a handshake deal with the landlord. 3 months in the landlord tried to raise the rent, so he shut down. Tragedy.
