@sampson_dog Love this article. Peeta is almost always with me,however, some activities, such adaptive skiing, is not quite dog friendly. :-) During such activities as that or while snorkeling on vacation with my husband- like you, I had someone with my service dog.

PSA 📢Disabled people choose their method of disability management! Mom went to the restroom without me while at a restaurant. I stayed safely with Marshal Jim. Lady in the restroom, "“Didn't you have a service dog?" Mom, "Yes." (I'm not there) "Then you must not need one." Let's unpack this!
Many service dog handlers may decide not to take their service dog with them everywhere. There are a variety of reasons why someone might choose to do this. It does not mean they do not need their service dog.
Disabled people have good days and bad days, good moments or bad moments, and may need to rely on their dogs sometimes more than others. Disabled people typically know their bodies well and can recognize and anticipate how much support they need. Mom knows when and what type of support she needs. She may be out for a short time and decide not to bring me for a quick errand or outing if she's feeling well enough - or into the restroom when I can hang out with Marshal Jim. However, that same activity on a bad health day may require significant support from her service dog (me!).
Different places and environments may or may not be challenging for disabled people in general to navigate. This could be due to accessibility and navigation issues in the space itself, overwhelming crowds, bright lights, long distances, and more. A quick stop at the convenience store may be feasible to manage on her own. At the same time, a longer grocery store outing can create far too much hardship and could be made significantly easier to navigate with me at her side.
Service dog or not, some places are just not safe for a dog. Handlers must always look out for their partner’s best interest and health; service dogs have bad days, too - we get sick, injured, or are just tired some days, and sometimes, that means leaving a service dog at home.
For many disabled people, a service dog can significantly increase day-to-day independence. Where they may have previously needed an aid, a helper, or even a friend to help them stay safe, a service dog can allow someone to navigate their daily life without relying on another person. There may be times when Mom is out with a person (or people) she trusts to help her (generally Marshal Jim). This may be when she'll choose to leave me at home, especially the closer I get to retirement.
For many disabled people, leaving their service dog can be a tough thing to do. But, there are many legitimate reasons for leaving one’s service dog at home from time to time, and often, these factors intertwine. When deciding whether or not to bring their service dog, a handler is likely thinking of many of the above factors at once and calculating the risks versus the benefits. Having their service dog stay home on any given day is a personal and likely well-thought-out decision. This does not reflect any less on the handler’s need for the dog or the legitimacy of the dog’s work.
This decision is made by the disabled person; it should be no one else’s concern.

@sampson_dog @CaesarsPalace So very true! I can be hard advocating when experiencing the challenges. I have found taking a moment to meditate w/ my service dog to be helpful & for those situations where I am personally struggling w/ a health challenge, following up communication platforms.
English

@ForwardRolling @CaesarsPalace Thank you! We found the same - calm communication can lead to understanding, awareness, and ultimately long-term solutions.
English

The presence of a problem is just the absence of a solution. Mom just spoke directly to the VP of Hotel Operations at @CaesarsPalace. They are actively reviewing/updating policies and procedures for disability inclusion, are committed to retraining staff and management on disability etiquette and accommodations, as well as overall customer service, and are evaluating the possibility of long-term structural changes for inclusive design for all. Well done!
Many here have said this shouldn't have happened in the first place. The VP wholeheartedly and sincerely agreed; he listened, noted what Mom had to say and the guidance she could give, and was understanding and apologetic. We are grateful to be put in places where a problem presents itself to us, as we have the experience to address it and can help correct it for future community members. We also want to point out that this is EXACTLY how corporations should respond. Mom could not be more pleased with the way this was handled.
Thank you to all the community members. You also made this possible with your support. Caesars Palace will be an updated, inclusive destination for all! They have invited us to come back early next year to meet with them personally. It is an honor to represent the disabled community and to assist in making positive change. One paw print at a time!

@alexandra_DBmed The more we speak out about it the more likely we are to begin to get representation in this arena - personally I was five units away from my law degree when I encountered serious challenges, and I am still finding a way to fight it
English

@alexandra_DBmed Don’t give up – I really had similar problems in law school and I’m still fighting the system, but don’t give up. There are many of us that have to use wheelchairs or that have challenges with EDS in post, secondary education, and find it difficult to find representation -
