The Rationalists have a practice of making bets on disagreements, to discourage bullshitting and force legible resolutions. For the most part I admire this. I've won some bets with them and lost some.
One frustrating thing to watch for, though, is that if a Rationalist demands you bet them, it's often a social move or emotional venting, and will not actually lead to a bet. I've had people huffily demand I bet on some claim I made which upsets them, and then when I agree they'll raise some silly excuse to back out, or if it's online they'll just stop replying once they've cooled off.
IME this only happens when the bet is framed as a challenge or demand. When the bet comes from a collaborative discussion, I've never seen the proposer back out. (Except one time the guy emailed me like "After thinking about this more, I'm moving closer to your position and I'd rather not make the bet I proposed", which I have no problem with.)

I do not understand those calling for this man to be pardoned. There must be zero tolerance for this kind of behavior. An elite operator used advance knowledge of a classified operation to line his own pockets. That is a betrayal of trust, a violation of the profession, and a direct threat to the men and women who serve beside him.
Discipline is the backbone of any fighting force. When someone entrusted with the nation’s most sensitive responsibilities chooses personal profit over duty, the standard cannot bend.
I share the frustration that justice too often appears uneven and that powerful people sometimes escape consequences. That anger is justified. But the remedy is not a pardon for another’s wrongdoing. The remedy is accountability applied without fear or favor.
Hold them all accountable. No exceptions. Let this be the catalyst for reform and equal justice.

FIRE is probably the most soul crushing lifestyle I have ever heard of and it's a terrible indictment on our society.
Some of the most competent and intelligent people are structuring themselves to live as minimally as possible so they can check out of society before they're 40.
Many of these people are unbelievably hard workers and incredibly intelligent. But they are so disillusioned so all of their potential goes to waste because there's no point to work for more.

If we eliminated the very substantial risk to his employer for hiring or promoting him instead of a woman who helps “diversity numbers”, however, it might help quite a lot. We’ve had at least 30 years of a substantial thumb on the scale against men, particularly white men, in the job market.
Nobody, including me, claimed the entire economic climate is shaped by this issue. I did claim that in some substantial ways, policy is putting a pretty big thumb on the scale. We should stop doing that and see what happens.

Then “We are the news now” was the point of X, Next it was write articles and win money. Now’s it TikTok and Facebook messenger.
