It’s free speech. It’s not free-from-consequences speech. So, if your speech incites violence, racial hatred, arson, pogroms… there will and must be consequences. That’s not an affront to democracy. That is democracy. And the law. Rather than mob rule and fascism.

@InTheKeyOfLife5 @chrisbowditch @13sarahmurphy Speech doesn't cause other people to riot or do violence. That is on them, no? Is that not their choice? So no, I don't think free speech ends here. But of course, Britain's crackdown on speech goes way beyond this. Guy got gulaged the other day for calling cops, "bastards".

Nobody can “incite” violence… unless they have willing listeners. Are you saying there’s words I can say, that would make you go and hurt someone? And that it would be my fault that you did? Democracy is meaningless without free speech. Anything else is nothing more than a slide into censorship and authoritarian regimes.

@chrisbowditch @13sarahmurphy Free to express an idea or opinion. It is not an opinion to urge others to violence, murder or riot, especially if there are dates, times, and meeting places. It's just good old premeditation. Malice aforethought. Intent to harm.

@Public_Enemy_01 @arcticnead Religious? No. However, Spain is a popular choice for violent British gangsters on the run. Criminals with a lawless ideology. Sensibly, the Spanish don't think all British migrants are criminals, based on the behaviour of a few. We could learn from them.

@qweentoshi So, if the US authorities become aware of people who were, talking enthusiastically about a future attack on an event, with dates, times, and details... like blocking the exits and setting fire to the place... they would do nothing? Just write it off as 'opinion'?

Everyone is missing the point. It’s not that we Americans feel everyone should be able to say ‘racist’ things or ‘incite violence,’ it’s the simple fact that laws against speech are open to ANY interpretation. It’s impossible to draw a clear line between legal and illegal speech. If you’re a nuisance for your government and they want to silence you, teach you a lesson, or make an example out of you badly enough, they can simply decide that anything you’ve said is hate speech. Maybe you commented on a photo and called someone’s shoes ugly. Maybe you wrote a post about your boss being a prick. Are those things considered hate speech? Most people would agree that they aren’t, but with a law that has no clear definition, they very well *could* be. Going down this road is EXTREMELY dangerous. Don’t think for a second that it can’t or won’t happen to you just because you express/hold opinions that the current administration deems ‘acceptable’ at this point in time. There will come a day when someone takes office who is the political opposite of you, and you can rest assured that you’ll find yourself on the flip side of this now that the precedent has been set. Once laws against speech are in place and being abused against the people as they are now, it’s a race to the fucking bottom, my friend.

Freedom of Speech without consequences is such an American concept. Freedom of Speech shouldn't mean you can be racist, bigoted or incite violence without consequences. It has been like this for DECADES in Europe with little issue. NONE. Why can't Americans accept that culturally we and many countries have different views on what is acceptable and don't have adhere to the United States 1st Amendment? Also, never hear Elon criticising his friend Modi for their authoritarian use of laws to silence people. X even complies with Indian court orders.
Elon Musk@elonmusk

Freedom of speech is the bedrock of democracy. If the truth is suppressed, it is impossible to make an informed voting decision. The degree to which freedom of speech is being undermined around the world is extremely alarming.

@kpkiwoong @world_of_pies Not 'people of other nations', social media companies who fail to moderate adequately. This platform has rules (on hate, spam, glorifying violence, etc) which it routinely fails to uphold, for example.

@implausibleblog The racists think the rest of us are eaten up with the same hate. Decent people have always had to teach the far-right a lesson. From Cable Street to WW2 to last week.I don't know why they keep rising up. They only get a spanking and put back in their box when they do.

Sky news, "You've never been on one of these anti racist marches?" Couple from Kingston, "We've been horrified by what's going on.. We believe the riots don't represent what the vast majority of people in this country feel.. We want everyone in this country to feel welcome no matter where they're from or who they are.. The thought of people feeling scared to walk out their front door horrifies us" "We have a lot of problems in this country and they're not down to immigration" @AntiRacismDay

@davidhogg111 If it's accepted that taxes pay for all children to have a free education (and pencils, books, desks etc) because it's in the national interest to have a literate population, why would it be 'far left' for the same children to have enough energy to concentrate?

Just to be extremely clear when Walz is accused of being “far left” that’s because he made sure all kids in schools in Minnesota got free lunch. God forbid.

I’m going to ask this again. Where is Musk currently? Is he in the States? Is he actually sitting there in the early hours of the morning trawling for anything to attack Starmer with? It’s so weird. Where’s all this coming from?
Josh Self@Josh_Self_

Just Elon Musk quote tweeting the co-leader of far-right party, Britain First, who is sharing a fake Telegraph headline Seen by almost 1 million people in 15 minutes Utterly dystopian

Good morning you lovely lot! So thankfully the violence promised by the far right didn't happen last night. Instead we got massive displays of unity as communities came together across the country to show that they won't tolerate either racism or mindless destruction. Isn't it great?
