@FakeBigBunjeee @woodward_helen @mikejt4 @13sarahmurphy Was that the same guy that copied the police in on the post and then pleaded guilty when arrested.... ?
English

@woodward_helen @InTheKeyOfLife5 @mikejt4 @13sarahmurphy One of the guys got charged with incitement for a post he made after the crime had already happened the government just doesn't care
English

@New_Common_Law @chrisbowditch @13sarahmurphy The law against incitement doesn't require a violent outcome. The incitement itself is the offence. The UK doesn't have 'gulags', there is no crackdown on speech, and our Police are capable of distinguishing 'insults' from 'aggravated assaults'.
Saint Albans, East 🇬🇧 English

@InTheKeyOfLife5 @chrisbowditch @13sarahmurphy Speech doesn't cause other people to riot or do violence.
That is on them, no?
Is that not their choice?
So no, I don't think free speech ends here.
But of course, Britain's crackdown on speech goes way beyond this.
Guy got gulaged the other day for calling cops, "bastards".
English

@morepuzzled @mikejt4 @13sarahmurphy The independent justice system decides, based on laws created by democratically representatives, tested by repeated cases. Applicable to all, of course.
Saint Albans, East 🇬🇧 English

@InTheKeyOfLife5 @mikejt4 @13sarahmurphy And that is the problem. It makes it subjective so the ruling party can decide.
And one day the ball is in the other court.
English

@mikejt4 @13sarahmurphy That's the English Law. Australian Law is bound to have some similarities.
Saint Albans, East 🇬🇧 English

@InTheKeyOfLife5 @13sarahmurphy Which makes it even more insane… are you trying to make my point for me?
English

@mikejt4 @13sarahmurphy There doesn't have to be a violent outcome for you to fail the incitement to violence test.
English

Nobody can “incite” violence… unless they have willing listeners. Are you saying there’s words I can say, that would make you go and hurt someone? And that it would be my fault that you did?
Democracy is meaningless without free speech. Anything else is nothing more than a slide into censorship and authoritarian regimes.
English

@chrisbowditch @13sarahmurphy Free to express an idea or opinion. It is not an opinion to urge others to violence, murder or riot, especially if there are dates, times, and meeting places. It's just good old premeditation. Malice aforethought. Intent to harm.
English

@13sarahmurphy Quick question what is the free referring to if not consequences?
English

@Public_Enemy_01 @arcticnead Religious? No. However, Spain is a popular choice for violent British gangsters on the run. Criminals with a lawless ideology. Sensibly, the Spanish don't think all British migrants are criminals, based on the behaviour of a few. We could learn from them.
English

@qweentoshi So, if the US authorities become aware of people who were, talking enthusiastically about a future attack on an event, with dates, times, and details... like blocking the exits and setting fire to the place... they would do nothing? Just write it off as 'opinion'?
English

Everyone is missing the point. It’s not that we Americans feel everyone should be able to say ‘racist’ things or ‘incite violence,’ it’s the simple fact that laws against speech are open to ANY interpretation. It’s impossible to draw a clear line between legal and illegal speech.
If you’re a nuisance for your government and they want to silence you, teach you a lesson, or make an example out of you badly enough, they can simply decide that anything you’ve said is hate speech. Maybe you commented on a photo and called someone’s shoes ugly. Maybe you wrote a post about your boss being a prick. Are those things considered hate speech? Most people would agree that they aren’t, but with a law that has no clear definition, they very well *could* be.
Going down this road is EXTREMELY dangerous. Don’t think for a second that it can’t or won’t happen to you just because you express/hold opinions that the current administration deems ‘acceptable’ at this point in time. There will come a day when someone takes office who is the political opposite of you, and you can rest assured that you’ll find yourself on the flip side of this now that the precedent has been set.
Once laws against speech are in place and being abused against the people as they are now, it’s a race to the fucking bottom, my friend.
English

Freedom of Speech without consequences is such an American concept.
Freedom of Speech shouldn't mean you can be racist, bigoted or incite violence without consequences.
It has been like this for DECADES in Europe with little issue. NONE.
Why can't Americans accept that culturally we and many countries have different views on what is acceptable and don't have adhere to the United States 1st Amendment?
Also, never hear Elon criticising his friend Modi for their authoritarian use of laws to silence people. X even complies with Indian court orders.
Elon Musk@elonmusk
Freedom of speech is the bedrock of democracy. If the truth is suppressed, it is impossible to make an informed voting decision. The degree to which freedom of speech is being undermined around the world is extremely alarming.
English

@kpkiwoong @world_of_pies Not 'people of other nations', social media companies who fail to moderate adequately. This platform has rules (on hate, spam, glorifying violence, etc) which it routinely fails to uphold, for example.
Saint Albans, East 🇬🇧 English

@world_of_pies but why are they threatening people of other nations in their own homes
English

@Annette93501208 @implausibleblog They rise up when we take our eye off the ball. Usually, when there's some kind of economic stress. Vigilance always needed.
English

@implausibleblog The racists think the rest of us are eaten up with the same hate. Decent people have always had to teach the far-right a lesson. From Cable Street to WW2 to last week.I don't know why they keep rising up. They only get a spanking and put back in their box when they do.
English

Sky news, "You've never been on one of these anti racist marches?"
Couple from Kingston, "We've been horrified by what's going on.. We believe the riots don't represent what the vast majority of people in this country feel.. We want everyone in this country to feel welcome no matter where they're from or who they are.. The thought of people feeling scared to walk out their front door horrifies us"
"We have a lot of problems in this country and they're not down to immigration" @AntiRacismDay
English

@davidtome @GedGrebby @migrants_rights @refugeecouncil @DanielKebedeNEU @NorthernUNISON @KiMcGuinness @SusanDungworth @unisontheunion @MichaelRosenYes @NevilleSouthall The previous government failed to process asylum seekers, which resulted in massive additional costs. Refugees would much prefer to be processed, start work, pay tax, and build a life. They are not to blame for Tory incompetence.
English

@GedGrebby @MigrantVoiceUK @migrants_rights @refugeecouncil @DanielKebedeNEU @NorthernUNISON @KiMcGuinness @SusanDungworth @unisontheunion @MichaelRosenYes @NevilleSouthall Hate to tell you this but you can have more than 1 enemy. There's also no requirement for qualification other than 'are they making your life worse?'.....

English

"The enemy arrives by private jet not a dingy".
Well said #Newcastle #RacistsNotWelcome

English

@davesumnersmith Yes. Or my family wouldn't exist
English

@AndrewPRLevi Amazing how many claiming to understand freedom of speech can't differentiate between opinion and incitement/plotting/murderous intent.
English

@domjoly @womble1958 Apart from the lies, what is this weird speech pattern?
English

@davidhogg111 If it's accepted that taxes pay for all children to have a free education (and pencils, books, desks etc) because it's in the national interest to have a literate population, why would it be 'far left' for the same children to have enough energy to concentrate?
English

@EdHereTrades @Montylockedout @sooper_genius @thecycles @CatCranston @IanDunt @X Is the UAE (population 9m, chief export petrol) a viable alternative to the EU (population 450m, chief export 'our food')?

@DPJHodges The devil makes work for idle hands.
English

I’m going to ask this again. Where is Musk currently? Is he in the States? Is he actually sitting there in the early hours of the morning trawling for anything to attack Starmer with? It’s so weird. Where’s all this coming from?
Josh Self@Josh_Self_
Just Elon Musk quote tweeting the co-leader of far-right party, Britain First, who is sharing a fake Telegraph headline Seen by almost 1 million people in 15 minutes Utterly dystopian
English

@BlokeOnWheels This is how it always ends, Joe. Locking arms with each other and facing down the thugs together. We took our eye off the ball the last few years, and they got bold.
