@OGaddMMA Bear in mind the run Rockhold was on: Jacare, Jardine, Kennedy, Phillippou, Boetsch, Bisping, Machida, Weidman. Unreal! There was the loss to Vitor in there, but fans gave Rockhold a bit of a pass as Vitor was SO juiced up.

@OGaddMMA His boxing was criticised even then, but he was a quality kicker and his top game was immense. He’d just smashed Weidman: that was an elite level win that had recontextualised the division. He’d carved through Bisping already, and this rematch was on late notice. It was shocking

A strange element of covering this event has been mainstream political press asking me if the UFC White House event shows the UFC may risk being seen as too political. My response has been they’re already the most overtly political sports org in American history. You’re just now seeing this? Nevertheless, if it’s true the impression the UFC hasn’t necessarily crossed over into reputationally being political, there’s no question they will after this.

One thing I’m thinking about is that this event could become an annual thing. Trump likes the show and performative adoration. UFC has nothing that can juice its product like the office of the presidency. The BMF belt was supposed to be one and done, too. Just don’t rule it out.
