15 years ago we were living in the panhandle of Florida. Closest temple was Birmingham, AL which was a 5 hour drive. At the time, the 4 stakes that made up the panhandle got together and petitioned SLC for a temple. Church HQ came back and said "no" until they fix 3 things. 1. 60% of active members to have temple recommend. 2. 50% of temple recommend holders to regularly go to the temple. 3. 30% full tithe payers That has really stuck with me. If those numbers are similar across the church, it's amazing what the church can accomplish without 100% full tithe payers. Imagine what we could do if everyone paid tithing!

My Bishop confided in me that many members are claiming they are now unable to pay tithing. This will not end well. I recommend doing anything needed to pay tithing. Stopping the payments of tithing can mess up your life real quick!
