Crazy scene tonight at Columbia University: Jewish students came to the campus - and then this happened. The undergrad who filmed it told me: “We didn’t say a word. My friend had a Jewish star necklace. All of the sudden we’re surrounded, they’ve been circling us, threatening us”

Last night at @UCBerkeley, Jewish students were threatened, assaulted, and prevented from attending a speech by a Jewish speaker on campus. Campus police shut down this private event when it became clear that they could not protect the students. Multiple students reported being spat on, screamed at, called derogatory names like "dirty Jew" or "you Jew," and physically assaulted by protestors. Jewish students deserve to navigate their lives without fear, and it is crucial that there are significant repercussions for those hindering this goal, including the responsible organizations and individuals. Ultimately, the UC Berkeley administration bears the responsibility of ensuring the safety of Jewish students on campus, a duty that was not fulfilled last night.

Today is my birthday, but I am not celebrating. My only wish is that my husband Omri who was kidnapped by Hamas over 3 months ago will return to us. Or at least that we will get any sign of life from him. Here we are celebrating last year, though it feels like a lifetime ago 💔

Don't stop talking about Carmel! Carmel Gat was visiting her parents in Be’eri when she was kidnapped by Hamas. Her mother was murdered. She has been held captive in Gaza for 88 days. At least 22 hostages have died in Hamas captivity. Time is running out. #BringThemHomeNow

Watch and listen to this beautiful call to #BringThemHomeNow. One thousand musicians, along with the families of the 129 hostages, perform the song “HaBayta (Come Home)” at the Caesarea Amphitheatre.

Below is a letter - a searing indictment - sent to Dan Kalb, a liberal, pro-Israel environmental advocate. It's from UC Berkeley undergraduates, explaining why they have disinvited him from speaking to their class. Read more, and Cal's response here: jweekly.com/2023/12/14/jew…

I never bought or sold a stock and know nothing about investing, but maybe you'd know: Can you "short" a university?

As a human, a Jew and a former employee of @Harvard and @MIT, I am shaken to my core by these testimonies. May our society have the strength and clarity to bring us to a place where calls for the genocide of ANY group in ANY context are NEVER ok. We have our work cut out for us.
Bill Ackman@BillAckman

The presidents of @Harvard, @MIT, and @Penn were all asked the following question under oath at today’s congressional hearing on antisemitism: Does calling for the genocide of Jews violate [your university’s] code of conduct or rules regarding bullying or harassment? The answers they gave reflect the profound moral bankruptcy of Presidents Gay, Magill and Kornbluth. Representative @EliseStefanik was so shocked with the answers that she asked each of them the same question over and over again, and they gave the same answers over and over again. In short, they said: It ‘depends on the context’ and ‘whether the speech turns into conduct,’ that is, actually killing Jews. This could be the most extraordinary testimony ever elicited in the Congress, certainly on the topic of genocide, which to remind us all is: “the deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group” The presidents’ answers reflect the profound educational, moral and ethical failures that pervade certain of our elite educational institutions due in large part to their failed leadership. Don’t take my word for it. You must watch the following three minutes. By the end, you will be where I am. They must all resign in disgrace. If a CEO of one of our companies gave a similar answer, he or she would be toast within the hour. Why has antisemitism exploded on campus and around the world? Because of leaders like Presidents Gay, Magill and Kornbluth who believe genocide depends on the context. To think that these are the leaders of Ivy League institutions that are charged with the responsibility to educate our best and brightest. On the bright side, our congressional leaders deserve accolades for showing tremendous leadership and moral clarity in their statements, by the questions they asked, and the respectfulness with which they conducted the hearing. It was a masterclass of how our government and democracy should operate. If you have time, please watch the entire hearing. Throughout the hearing, the three behaved like hostile witnesses, exhibiting a profound disdain for the Congress with their smiles and smirks, and their outright refusal to answer basic questions with a yes or no answer.

I was ashamed to hear the recent testimony of 3 top university presidents. In my personal opinion, it was one of the most despicable moments in the history of U.S. academia. The 3 Presidents were offered numerous opportunities to condemn racist, antisemitic, hate rhetoric and refused doing so hiding behind calls for “context.” The memories of my father’s parents, Abraham and Rachel Bourla, his brother David and his little sister Graciela, who all died in Auschwitz, came to mind. I was wondering if their deaths would have provided enough “context” to these presidents to condemn the Nazis' antisemitic propaganda. And because dehumanization of the victims makes it easier to “set your own context” and justify anything, here is a picture of Graciela Bourla, who was exterminated in the concentration camp at the age of 17. Unfortunately, no pictures of my grandparents and uncle survived. I still wonder what they looked like.

Let's be crystal clear: there is NO "context" in which calling for the genocide of Jews is OK. These leaders' lack of moral clarity in response to this line of questioning is shameful but not surprising based on the past few weeks. @ADL will continue fighting to protect Jewish students on campus.

"I saw this beautiful woman with eight or ten of the fighters beating and raping her. "She was screaming, 'Stop it—I’m going to die anyway from what you are doing, just kill me!'" They were laughing. The last one shot her in the head. Savages. thejc.com/news/israel/ha…
