Alas! we seem to have hardly any desire after God, and have strangely dropped our concern about an intercourse with him.'

And I am afraid, if the question were put to the closets of some under a high profession of godliness, how often they are made use of, and what sort of worship is performed there, the testimony would be to their disgrace and confusion.

If so, then let us be free and open in our confessions, lie low before God in our humiliations, be earnest and importunate with him in our supplications;

Matthew Bingham's summation on the practice of daily devotion/ "quiet time": "But whatever negative associations arise in our hearts and minds when we hear the term quiet time, the reality remains that historic Reformation Protestants were simply following the Bible's own prescriptions when they place God's word at the center of spiritual formation... Early modern Christians understood this, and their lives are examples for us to follow. For their part, they never use the term quiet time, but they nonetheless walked with God by daily leaning on his word." Matthew Bingham, A Heart Aflame for God, 126.

Dear Brothers, I hold in high regard my brothers and sisters of the paedo reformed and credo reformed convictions. I still argue with my sister who is 18 months younger than me. But don’t ever let anyone try and come between us! Blessings siblings in Christ.

Ettrick Parish Church on the Scottish Borders. The Puritan minister Thomas Boston pastored here from 1707-32. One of Boston’s best known works is his devotional classic, The Crook in the Lot, which is a pastoral guide for Christians navigating difficult providences. It is one of my favorite Puritan works. Boston was also a leading figure in the famous Marrow Controversy, and eventually produced extensive notes on The Marrow of Modern Divinity, defending the book against charges of antinomianism. Boston emerged as a major advocate for the free offer of the gospel within the framework of a Calvinist soteriology, and labored to articulate a reformed understanding of the proper relationship between the law and the gospel. Sinclair Ferguson treats the Marrow Controversy, and Boston’s involvement, in his superb book, The Whole Christ. Boston is also known for this theological treatise, Human Nature in Its Fourfold State, which was greatly admired by none other than Jonathan Edwards. @RHB_Books @banneroftruth

@JeffTaylorLR Likewise! Ordained Presbyterian Elder (PCA) since 1988, now happily serving as a member of a 1689-ish Baptist church and loving it. And yes, there is a story there.
