He landed on Omaha Beach with the first waves on D-Day, was the only survivor from his landing craft after a machine-gun ambush, and took shrapnel from a German mine just days later, earning his first Purple Heart. After six months recovering in England, he went right back into it: fought in the Battle of the Bulge, survived brutal hand-to-hand combat, took a bullet to the chest, and was one of the few who escaped the Malmedy massacre. By the end of the war, this man had earned a Silver Star for valor and three Purple Hearts total. Discharged as a Private First Class in 1946. He rarely talked about it later, said the memories were too painful, but that grit from the battlefield clearly fueled one of Hollywood’s most reliable tough-guy performances. Real American hero. Massive respect to every veteran who stormed those beaches and held the line. 🫡
