SCORE: 7.6ish/10 Did not read the book. Enjoyable blockbuster film. For me, played like a sugarcoated blend of Interstellar and Arrival — big production, big star, ambitious, but made to go down easy. All the insane photography being highlighted is mostly just one sequence. The actual meat felt less insane. The whole thing boils down to the relationship between the 2 protagonists, who just happened to be saving the universe, versus the inverse. Which is not to minimize — it's easily the best part of the movie. The humor didn’t really land for me. Made it feel like a kids movie at times. A lot of the zingers and fumbling felt disconnected from the stakes, especially given how much the movie leans on its science/math credibility. Didn't have the epicness of Interstellar. Didn't have the mindbend of Arrival. That said, judging from the crowd in theater, it might be the perfect balance for today's Marvel-hungry masses.
