Trump brings the Age of Humiliation for friends. Modi’s stoicism abroad needs much humility at home… Three things Modi has done sensibly… The fourth he could, but likely won’t.. #NationalInterest for the week theprint.in/national-inter…

1. Iran has confirmed the death of Ali Larijani, its most powerful leader & top security official, in strikes by Israel. #CutTheClutter traces Larijani’s journey & his rise from a science student, philosopher to Ayatollah’s Khamenei’s closest confidant. It also explains why his assassination will be a blow to Iran’s leadership.   2. Ali Ardeshir Larijani was quite a fascinating figure — a man of letters, a philosopher, a computer science & math graduate with a Master’s & PhD in western philosophy. He was an expert on Immanuel Kant & had written 6 books on Kant’s philosophy, often arguing with him because Larijani was a self-proclaimed religious fundamentalist.   3. Larijani joined the armed forces after finishing his education & fought for 8 years in the Iran-Iraq War, rising to brigadier general in the IRGC. He then became culture minister & headed Iranian TV and radio for 11 years as head of propaganda. He also served as Speaker of Parliament, Iran's top security official, and a key strategist.   4. Power in Iran is divided. There is a Majlis (elected parliament) & a directly elected president. Both have some powers. But the big power lies with the Supreme Leader, elected by a council of religious leaders. Under him are 2 councils — the Guardian Council, which protects the state’s ideology, & the Expediency Discernment Council, which resolves differences between the Guardian Council & the elected govt.   5. Since 2020, Larijani was a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, whose chairman, as it happens, is Sadi Larijani, his brother. The Larijani family has also been called the 'Kennedys of Iran' with influence across politics, academia, and security.   6. The most powerful position Larijani held was as a member of the Expediency Discernment Council besides being the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. These 2 made him the second-most powerful person after the supreme leader. Until yesterday, for all practical purposes, Ali Larijani was the Bairam Khan to Mojtaba Khamenei’s young Akbar.   7.
