Doesn’t mean it’s the entirety of it.

@bradenkeith @MoonCall Yeah, the average MLB ump salary is 300K. I think most people would accept more public scrutiny for that payout — doing a job that the computer could easily be doing instead for the most part.

If you’re not a baseball fan you will not know how much we needed the ABS. It used to be so frustrating to watch umpires completely screw the game up. Strategy for this is pretty fun. You get 2 chances to be wrong on ABS in a game. Choose wisely. I also could see where we don’t replace the home plate umpire but make them a common enemy in the stadium. Telling the man he’s wrong is a character in the show we all want to root against. Listen to the crowd in this clip. How fun is that.

@dmbkparker @BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ Here it is. That is called shadow zone accuracy, a baseball width (around 3inches) in or off of the plate. The accuracy on those pitches has been improving over the years, and it’s at around 80% right now. That’s the average. So terrible umps presumably 70%

@YankeeLineups @BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ I would love to see the numbers on that. Take all the pitches within say 3in of the zone and see a percentage. Thats a great way to look at it. Also have you been to a high school game lately? 6-8in may be giving them a bit much credit.

@BuffJE0920 @dmbkparker @Jomboy_ Because batters aren’t just challenging the obvious bad calls, they are also challenging borderline calls. And they get penalized for it by losing their challenges ability to challenge the obvious ones later on. Smart players and teams have a MUCH higher % on challenges

The ones being challenged would be the obvious ones. And in AAA/spring training, they were usually not overturned. Most umps (not CB) are incredible at this

@dmbkparker @BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ Yes and I’m telling you that % is misleading because it includes the obvious calls that a high school ump can make. A ball 8 inches outside. A ball 6 inches in the plate. If you strip the obvious ones away, the % on actual difficult calls is pretty bad.

@EYankees0904 @Rick12_85 Yes, and we’ve also seen teams (like the Red Sox with CB last night) lose their challenges as a result of that in the 4th inning and have to suffer through a handful of shit calls that they cannot challenge anymore. I don’t think that is recognized enough by the anti-ABS crowd.

@Jomboy_ @dmbkparker This ABS challenge system is dumb. 2-year bridge to full ABS balls and strikes calls. If the technology is there, why not use it fully? Instead we’ll waist time on challenges so we don’t hurt umpires’s feelings for a while.

@BuffJE0920 @Jomboy_ @dmbkparker For borderline calls, umps are around 70-80% accurate. That’s not “a missed call here or there”. Most calls can be made by your average high school ump — it’s the borderline ones that make an ump “professional” and they’re only 20-30% better than a literal 50/50 guess.

@EYankees0904 @Rick12_85 Yes but the system inherently de-incentivizes challenging those close calls, because you risk losing your 2 challenges and then you won’t be able to challenge the 8 obviously bad calls afterward. So players will more often than not get punished for using the system that way….

@Rick12_85 I think that’s the sentiment people saying stuff like this are trying to convey. Like the Grisham challenge yesterday was great, that was well out of the zone. But when the batter/catcher happens to guess that it clipped or didn’t clip the zone by 1 mm it’s like what’s the point

@ChrisTeekii @BarstoolHubbs I’d love to see that lawsuit. I’m not a lawyer but even I could win that for MLB considering there is so much precedent in other sports for implementing challenges to overturn an official’s ruling. So I can’t imagine what basis they would have.

@commonzentz22 @michaelFhurley Everyone is clearly shown those distances, so their reaction to an overturn will be whatever it is given that info. When I see a 0.1” overturn, I think: “Wow that was close, not bad ump but happy for you player. Don’t try that again cause you’ll prob lose your challenge…”

@michaelFhurley I’ll keep asking this. When the ball is missing the knees or mid section by mere millimeters, how do we know the abs system is judging the knees and mid section the same as the umpire for every batter? Is it even satisfying to have those calls over turned by mere millimeters?

@acnelson93 @Vindog56 Now what you have remaining are the actual “difficult” calls. The ones in a 3 to 5 inch range both in or out of the zone. The kind of call that not anybody can make. So the question is — what percentage of THOSE pitches do the umpires get correct.

@acnelson93 @Vindog56 Firstly, you have to eliminate all the pitches that are swung at, for obvious reasons. Then you should eliminate the obvious calls, which is admittedly a bit arbitrary but if a pitch is within a 10” box at the center of the zone or is 8” outside the zone, a HS ump can call it…

If a home-plate umpire has 5 calls overturned, he should move to first base, and all the umpires should shift one spot over so the third-base umpire goes behind the plate. CB Bucknor had 6 calls overturned yesterday, and there were at least six more that could've been overturned if the teams had challenges left in regulation. Imagine over Bucknor's career, how many bad calls he's made? MLB should review the entire game and suspend him for doing such a horrible job behind the plate. And he took it personally, too. That's when he was no longer capable of calling balls and strikes and should've been moved to first base...

@tallGOPgamerguy @RangersFanCave @CodifyBaseball And in football, I think the thing that bothers fans the most are calls and non-calls of holding, shoving, etc. Things we can’t easily automate. Same with basketball being fouls committed. In baseball, the biggest gripe is balls and strikes and that can be easily addressed.

@tallGOPgamerguy @RangersFanCave @CodifyBaseball The other difference is it’s very easy to make strike-calling automated (much like the tennis system) whereas if would be very difficult to automate most basketball or football calls. That said, I prefer hybrid over fully-automated in MLB for now, mostly for embarrassing umps.
