@WordSmartComms @Miller_Corner @BrooklandsCLtd @ListerLawrence Indeed. E30 3 series touring is similar in size as F20 1 series. Even 3 series nowadays is getting too big for my liking. That's one of the reasons I'm so annoyed that @bmw ruined 1 series the way they did with F40 and F70. FWD is a deal-breaker.

@WordSmartComms @Miller_Corner @BrooklandsCLtd @ListerLawrence Exactly that! The one reason I switched to E87 back in the day was it being RWD. A SWB 3 series with usability of 5 doors. If I wanted a Golf/Focus etc I bought one. A BMW needs RWD bias. I'll bet that research would show similar figures on 3 & 5 drivers but they'll remain RWD.

Spread by BMW to sell the decision to switch to FWD for every BMW with 4/5 doors sub 3 series/X3 level. Even so: those 80% won't care either way, you won't lure new buyers, you'll lose 20% & dilute brand's image. Good to see that FWD 1 wrecked.

@Mr1000CR Giulia anyday. Such a shame that platform wasn't put to more use. Would've enjoyed to see a 5d hatchback: revive the Giulietta model with a RWD biased one. 159 was too heavy, 156 a beauty and a pleasure to drive but sadly FWD. RWD 75 charming classic but as a daily Giulia anyday.

@kmartyn5 @biggjohnsonway @BMW BMW plans to keep current split in the line-up with their New Class EV platforms. So everything sub 3 series/X3 level will have FWD bias because BMW thinks customers want that. Even though for example Volvo switched from FWD to RWD recently. Customers buying FWD BMW do not help.

My understanding is that when we are talking about ground up EVs, there is need for FWD at all. I do realize it’s a bit cheaper to do, but driving dynamics are better with RWD. Electric vehicles don’t have that heavy engine upfront, they have low even weight distribution from the battery, so you don’t have a need to have the driven wheels under the weight up front. When the front wheels are used to both steer and provide the power forward, you get things like torque steer. AWD EVs will usually have a RWD bias.

One of the many reasons Nissan is in trouble, is that they look at EVs as a drivetrain swap, and manufacture accordingly. As a result they miss out on all the innovations, in the radically different EV manufacturing technology, which brings much better value to the consumer. Modified ICE vehicles will never be competitive in the EV market. Therefore companies like Nissan and Toyota will not be competitive with EVs, until they completely rethink design and production.

@kmartyn5 @biggjohnsonway CLA doesn't compete with 3 series but with 2 series Gran Coupe, a FWD ICE vehicle on the BMW MINI UKL platform. Interesting to see that Mercedes switches from FWD to RWD on the lower end while @BMW did the opposite alienating loyal customers in the process.

@Driveaholic_nl Ik ben juist afgehaakt door F40 en F70 lost de redenen waarom niet op. Met het voorwielaangedreven platform is de essentie van het merk weg. Geen achterwielaandrijvers met achterdeuren meer in segment onder 3 serie is @bmw onwaardig. Zo'n ding kopen geeft BMW verkeerd signaal.
