I don’t think that’s an accurate description. The actual movement of money isn’t where most financial institutions are making money. The better comparison is how much it costs to send a wire. Which, yes, it’s considerably cheaper. But it’s the services around that wire transfer (like cash withdrawals or fraud protection or bill pay or a million other things) that build up the margin. Stablecoins are an input, not a finished product.

To understand what’s going on with stablecoins and finance right now, ponder this: Using USDC on Base, you can send any amount of money to anyone anywhere in the world for less than a penny and in under a second. Consider all the billion-dollar giants whose entire business model is charging you rent on what crypto makes essentially free. What crypto is going to do to banks and legacy payment is like what AI will do for white-collar labor: a generational WTF moment that will make everyone scramble toward a new order.
