Yes you can pull acts out of hundreds and a multitude of different themes addressed in goth. It's an incredibly diverse place. There were the 'romantics' who wouldn't touch this stuff, that's why we have sub-genres in goth. I could easily point to The Cure, Sisters, Pink Turns Blue, Lycia, etc. to make my case. We're both right. Metal and punk are the same.

Nobody is saying there wasn't deviancy, there absolutely was. There's no such thing as mainstream goth since it's a worldwide subculture with unique local flavor, and opinions are influenced by where/when a person experienced it. What a lot of us saw was a sharp turn from gloomy kids hanging out in a cemetery and wearing poet shirts in a goth club to blinking an eye and there were dildos all over tables and people existing for shock value. More cerebral 'art punk' to sex subculture. Obviously no rules, just sayin.'

@basebaritone @dakroot @JakeMunro please do not pretend that there was no deviancy and grifting in goth back in the day it was a punk-derived underground music scene of course there was fuckin deviancy and grifting

The only explanation I have for how my family got me was that the stork made a wrong turn and left my wretched, gloomy behind on their doorstep by mistake. No idea what I did to deserve these people.

@Covert_Snowman @JakeMunro Love the 80s aesthetic, too, I think they called it 'art punk.' We were 90s kids, so it was the tail end of Victorian/Edwardian inspired, which is still the most beautiful version of goth ;)

@dakroot @JakeMunro Love goth women. I'm especially fond of the 80s and 90s aesthetic...but that's just me showing my age.

@dakroot @JakeMunro You are correct. I dated/had friends in the goth scene as far back as the late 80's and as recently as 2020. Everything gradually went from introspection, clothes and music... to deviancy, grifting and posing. Sad. But true. #goth

@JakeMunro You're wrong on this one. In the late 90s, the fetishist usurpers arrived, both men and women, and pushed trad goths out. Trad goths still exist, dress modestly and focus on art. They are just quiet.

It's really tough. Almost like you have to go super high end to use the materials that will sell the quality angle. Not impossible, but it will be 100% a marketing/storytelling play. Most of your time will be making content and getting PR and what not. Not a bad thing, but it's a lot of work.

@dakroot I used to use a lot of really nice merino and alpaca, but where I live people just didn't appreciate it so now I use mostly acrylic, thrifted and gifted yarn to make my pieces. I do offer wool, bamboo, cotton etc. for customs though

So grok told me I've been way underselling my work, but would yall really pay even the lower end at $120 for a handmade balaclava? This isnt even factoring in possibilities for wool or upgraded materials. I dont want to overshoot & never make any sales because we're all broke.😆

@treeplanter77 @JakeMunro Yeah, that was when it became a cute spectacle. Anyone could join a serious art subculture with no participation required.

@dakroot @JakeMunro My hypothesis: Whatever year the general public could go to a shop and buy mass produced “Goth” fashion or “Punk” gear is the official corruption and demise of the genre.

@NoddyWalker @JakeMunro It's not always childhood trauma, some goths come from perfect families and are natural tortured souls lol. He looks like that because that's what goths tend to look like 🤷🏻‍♀️

@dakroot @lolnvmtho You don’t get to pump all the emotions and intimacy into someone and create connection then run away when you get what you begged for. Thats abandonment and childish. It’s an emotional immaturity issue. Grow up.

@dakroot @lolnvmtho Yea except you’re leaving out the part where even tho the dog was kicked everyday, it’s still showing YOU love and affection constantly. So now when I return it, you wanna run to the other room? Even tho I never kicked you myself? Grow up.
