The aurora in Paxson, Alaska was a STEVE (which stands for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement); a rare atmospheric optical phenomenon that appears as a narrow ribbon or streak of light in the night sky, typically glowing in purple, mauve, white, or sometimes with green hues or edges. It often looks like a glowing picket fence or arc, as appears in the photo above, and it's frequently seen alongside classic auroras like the northern lights (aurora borealis) or southern lights (aurora australis), but in an equatorial, or horizontal direction.
- A STEVE results from a narrow ribbon of extremely hot plasma (ionized gas) flowing rapidly in the upper atmosphere (around 450 km altitude). STEVE is not technically an aurora but an aurora-like or "protoplasmic" glow—distinct yet related to auroral activity.
- This plasma ribbon is typically about 25 km wide, reaches temperatures of around 3,000 °C (5,430 °F), and moves at speeds of about 6 km/s (much faster than surrounding air).
- The light comes from thermal emission due to this heating and fast ion flows (often linked to a phenomenon called subauroral ion drift or SAID), rather than direct particle precipitation like in regular auroras.

Stunning footage captures March 14 aurora substorm in Paxson, Alaska, as green plasma arcs surge over 1 km/s during a massive geomagnetic storm.

@encyclopath @Osint613 @Schizointel @Vincent_Ledvina The camera settings were messed up... happened too fast

@Osint613 @Schizointel @Vincent_Ledvina Holy shit, is there a filter or does it really look like that in person?

Additional footage of beautiful green northern lights in Alaska.

@CuriousVaultX @mars_stu @forallcurious Also the orientation of the Aurora is wrong. In the "video" the stars are rotating around a central point around 40° above the horizon which means it's around the latitude of Iowa and Nebraska. For one the scenery is wrong and 2 esp at that low of latitude the Aurora is east wst
English

@mars_stu @forallcurious Looks unreal because your eyes expect green. Cameras don’t. White auroras are a saturation artifact, not a Photoshop one.

@metfan722 @MaxVelocityWX Just look outside once it gets dark and stay outside, no timeframe. The CME just impacted so things are going nuts

@MohlerDon @BaseballGuruNY @anthonycerullo Navigators are not used anymore. For a flight like Hawaii it would be the CPT and FO plus a reliever pilot and any jumpseaters/deadheads in the back

Gigabit+ speeds from low Earth orbit.
First satellites for @ProjectKuiper are at their assigned 630km altitude, and the team just shared this speed test using our enterprise-grade customer terminal. So pumped to see this and looking forward to bringing this level of performance to our customers.

@unorthodoxmale @Liv_Boeree It does not matter if the window is open or not

@Liv_Boeree Radiation levels from the sun are x1000 compared to a typical chest xray at that attitude.

There is no threat for tsunami impacts in North Dakota.
If you are in a coastal area under threat however check tsunami.gov for up to date information and with local officials for any evacuation orders
squeeks ☻@KingSqueeksIII
@NWSGrandForks where is the tsunami warning for Fargo, apparently people are searching for this

@levikj @NWSGrandForks @ReedTimmerUSA I feel stupid for asking but what are those partial circles in the lower part of that photo?
English

One of the most insane photos I took of the damage from the North Dakota derecho. It shows silos ripped completely off their foundation and thrown almost a mile across a corn field
@NWSGrandForks @ReedTimmerUSA
(47.2539508, -97.2171881) for the coordinates of the silos

@levikj @ReedTimmerUSA Thanks for sharing these Levi! You mind if we use these in our event review with credit to you?
English

@NWSAberdeen @ReedTimmerUSA Ope sorry just saw this but yes you may use it

@levikj @ReedTimmerUSA Hello, we are reaching out to ask if we could get permission to use some of the aerial photos you took of the tornado paths in our event summary page on our website with credit you? Also, thank you so much for tagging us in the photos!
