Freire is a scourge in adult ed, which may attract more social justice types than K-12. I learned about Freire in my first week working in adult ed at a workshop where we were led to identify ourselves on a spectrum of educator types. I was a progressive, so I went to the Freire side of the room. I thought the Freirian approach sounded great: that the goal of adult ed should be empowering the student to participate in the public square and to take control of his own destiny. Yeah, sure! But as I started working with actual adult students, I realized this was at odds with their actual goals: to pass the GED or get into college, to improve their lot in life, and in some cases just to improve themselves through education. When I got into basic literacy and started teaching reading to adults, I came to think Freire was a liar. Despite his claim to have taught brick layers to read, he has left us with no method or curriculum. How can this be? Teaching reading to adults is hard. How did he do it? When you look for his methods in his writing, it becomes clear that he was into whole language, and that there is no evidence that he actually changed the reading levels of these adults. I am left with the impression that he taught students to memorize the spelling of words that were meaningful to them like “bean”. Discovering all this while at the same time getting to know adults whose lives had been terribly circumscribed and often traumatized by their inability to read was the beginning of my loathing for the Progressive Project.

I'd never heard of Paolo Freire until ed school. I realized instantly he had nothing useful to say to me as a South Bronx teacher. It's a sin he still gets assigned, not because it indoctrinates teachers, but because it wastes their time.

Topless protest led by trans people is turning heads outside of Trump Tower right now in NYC. The participants marched topless from Columbus Circle to 5th Avenue and are now baring themselves to protest Trump. Tuesday is “Trans Day of Visibility.”

I’m bothered by lack of solidarity among adults. Once at a baseball camp drop off boy was acting up and being rude to his mother when she reprimanded him. The one of the coaches pulled him to the side lectured him and marched him over and made him apologize to her. That kind of cooperation is rare but awesome when it happens.

@nmcdnyc @KTmBoyle We use to just call this basic respect for others. Now we are expected to support bad parenting lest we be “anti-child.” This is dumb.

@MegEBrock @KTmBoyle Balance and grace; a family with three little boys and a baby in front of us today. There was noise, mostly of the happy babble variety, but they quietly withdrew at some point because it was a long service for the kids. Happy they were there, but understood when they left.

@KTmBoyle It’s not anti-child to require kids act with respect and parents actually parent their kids. Kids who scream during a church service should be taken to the hallway by their parents.

Peggy Noonan wrote in the Wall Street Journal this morning that the nuclear bomb drills she had to do as a child instilled in her a “hatred for well-meaning fictions”, which led her to conservatism. I feel this happening to a lot of people right now. The left went too far with their blithe disdain for accuracy, debate, and honesty.

My cowardly colleague/terrible friend Ardal O'Hanlon did the same thing to me that @JohnLithgow does to JK Rowling here. It's always a vague disagreement with something or other but we're never told exactly what.

@JenniferSey @DavidLeftyMA Some people who are phenotypically female can have an XY chromosome pattern, but it’s uncommon and usually involves specific medical conditions related to sexual development. Where did you get your biology degree?

"'I have nothing but sympathy for anyone who sincerely believes they're one sex, because that's what they've been told all their life, and then finds out they're the other. That must be a truly shattering moment..." Schools now routinely suggest as much to young children.
J.K. Rowling@jk_rowling

I don't think Khelif can be classed as trans, because his claim has always been that he's biologically female, not that he 'identifies' as a woman. Imo, the only relevance of trans issues to Khelif's case is that the IOC fudged the sex testing requirements because they thought taking that would keep them safe from the ire of gender activists, and screw the consequences for female boxers. I've said this before: I have nothing but sympathy for anyone who sincerely believes they're one sex, because that's what they've been told all their life, and then finds out they're the other. That must be a truly shattering moment and I can see why said person would take refuge in denial. Some have argued 'but once puberty hit, how could he not know?' but I think that underestimates how much social conditioning and wishful thinking can blind a person to the truth. All of that said: I have no sympathy for the people surrounding a male boxer who keep pretending, to him and to others, that he's female after seeing the test results, nor for a fully-fledged adult man who's able to comprehend that he's male and has an insurmountable physical advantage when facing a female opponent. At that point, he and everyone else involved in promulgating the lie is knowingly risking the possibility that a female opponent will suffer brain damage or death, just so he can keep winning medals. That's an outrage that far surpasses any harm done to Khelif by taking a cheek swab and accepting facts. He's free to keep boxing, just in the proper sex category. All he loses is the opportunity to cheat.

@larissaphillip @salltweets Well, rule followers and psychopaths in the case of doctors. Did you see this story about the doctor who pretended a woman's uterus was diseased and removed it even though it was healthy?! As my kids would say, "I'm shook!"

@nmcdnyc @salltweets During Covid I heard someone on a podcast (a doctor) say that the medical field rewards rule-followers. The rebels and innovators get weeded out early in the training process. It seems Hollywood is the same.
