I spent a lot of my spare time last week ripping all of the surveillance tech out of the used work van I bought. They had it wired with exterior/interior cameras, motion sensors, and cellular GPS. I was most proud of reprogramming the PCM and removing the 70mph speed limiter. It still sends usage data to Ford by default.

25 years ago I did an estimate of every tool I'd need if I never wanted to borrow any, it came to around $125,000. I have a black version of this toolbox. It's probably more nowadays with computers and such. I use some pirated software and a data cable to work on my van. Last week I removed the speed limiter in the computer the last fleet owner put on it.

For those of you that have never worked as a professional automotive technician, you may not know that a technician's set of tools and toolbox may cost more than your new car. The shop does not supply a technician's tools. Technicians have to purchase them with their own money, and they continue to have to purchase more tools as technology keeps changing.

@Ruesavatar @oliveegger Most of my middle-aged friends who died from covid thought it was all nonsense. That could also be because I live in huge majority red area. It was certainly an interesting time.

@oliveegger I feel like a LOT of people would virtue signal blue, then vote red. Covid was a massive black pill for me in this regard- it was absolutely a ruthless “every man for himself” scenario and many people died who didn’t have to.

@PunkyCovfefe That was my discussion with the dude. I got basically half the shop charge back when I was a mechanic. He gets around a 20% now. They still supply all of their own tools and such. It used to be a decent career. The people I know who do good at it now have their own shop.

I went to a dealership to get a key made for my new/used van and they made an actual technician stop what he was doing and give me a ride home. They used to have a person for that job. I let the dude know it was bullshit. He just seemed to accept it. He also made less than I did at that dealership 25 years ago. Nuts.

Automotive Technicians are underpaid and under appreciated today. I am curious to who agrees and disagrees with that statement. Lots of misconceptions on how they are paid and what its like to be a technician especially in a new car dealership.

@humbleblazer There's a lot of stuff like that the last ten years. I was thinking yesterday how the best time to buy something lately is now. The work van I use went from 30k to 72k in a few years. A tool I needed yesterday went from $300 to $840
