They chased a 14-year-old Black boy over some water bottles, shot him in the back, and just got found Not Guilty. An all‑white jury has now been seated in the Karmelo Anthony trial. Twelve jurors, not a single Black member. Karmelo Anthony was 17 years old when he fatally stabbed Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas in April 2025. He is now 19 and standing trial as an adult, facing first‑degree murder charges. Karmelo has maintained from the beginning that he acted in self‑defense after being grabbed and threatened. The prosecution struck all qualified Black jurors from the panel. The defense filed a Batson challenge citing racial discrimination in the jury selection process. Tomorrow morning, I will stand before this panel and deliver opening statements on Karmelo’s behalf.

Black people are the only race of people I know that are hated by everyone. Every other race on Earth seems to hate African American people. What that lets me know is that we possess something that is so intimidating, so threatening, that people want to harm us, belittle us, humiliate us, and try to strip away our joy, our lives, and our very being. So I want every Black person to know how special you are. Because no one can be hated this much unless they possess something that no one else ever will.
