Today’s #OPESMathyMonday is a Convince Us That…routine in which classes are given an equation, statement, or model, and tasked with justifying why the given is true. This allows students to practice their reasoning & justification processes and is a great way to use math vocab.

Had the best time in first grade yesterday doing a #MathByTheBook lesson using the picture book My Rows and Piles of Coins to introduce money. Students did an amazing job connecting the text to our money, sorting coins by various attributes, and creating a coin foldable.

Last week for #OPESMathyMonday each class across the school engaged in a grade-specific choral count. This week classes worked through a What Comes Next Routine from @MLCmath. Love hearing how students are talking math each week during this school-wide math moment.

This week for #OPESMathyMonday classes participated in a math game called Math Yapper in which students take turns giving a partner clues about current or review math vocabulary. This routine comes from Daily Routines to Jump-Start Math Class by @JohnSanGiovanni. Kids loved it!

Last week for #OPESMathyMonday classes wrote math poems as we celebrate April as #NationalPoetryMonth and #MathAwarenessMonth. Check out these clever poems from our mathy poets.

@teacher2teacher My first group of 4th graders was in 2008 so those babies are now full grown 25 or 26 year-olds. Sheesh, that went by fast!

Today at @OPESEaglePride classes are participating in a CHEESY #GraphChat using a Slow Reveal Graph from @jennalaib for #OPESMathyMonday. This is an easy, fun #mathroutine to promote sense-making about data and teach through #mathematicalpractices.

Happy Sunday! I spent yesterday morning writing a progression of puzzle-y pictarithms for Gr K-7. Concepts build gradually across the grade levels & encourage algebraic thinking & sense-making at every step. Goal is to build strong reasoning & computation skills while having fun!

Anyone else?!

This little mathematician joined the party in October and has given me so much practice with elapsed time, but not much margin for anything else. 😂 Now that I’m settled in at work and finding a good routine, I’m excited to re-engage. But first, how cute are these Mathy jams?!

This week for #OPESMathyMonday we explored what it means to persevere (#MathematicalProcessStandard1) by reading the book A Little Spot of Perseverance and collaborating with teams to design, build, redesign, and rebuild the tallest towers with base ten blocks.

It's the first #OPESMathyMonday of the 23-24 school year! Today classes will make concept maps with math at the center. Classes are encouraged to brainstorm what math means to them, when they use math, tools, strategies, symbols, and more. Can't wait to see how these take shape!

Can't believe year 16 is already under way. Grateful for another year to learn and grow alongside some of the very best. What a blessing to get to do what you love every day!
