Yes, I am aware that according to modern Ukrainian ideas, the ancients Ukrainians, dug up the Black Sea. But if you want to discuss this nonsense, then go to them. Crimea, like Russia, has always been multinational, but for 300 years all the processes there have been mainly tied to Russia. With the exception of a short break from 1991 to 2014, when the peninsula tried to integrate into Ukraine. It didn't work out and it won't work out.

I quote: "After Russia’s illegal annexation of the peninsula, the Ukrainian leadership stated that the main condition for the renewal of the agreements on the water supply to the Crimea is the re-institution of legitimate authorities on the peninsula, which are absent following the annexation of Crimea." Do you have problems with reading skills? While the canal was in operation, Russia built artesian wells all over the peninsula, and struggled with other consequences - as you can see, successfully. The Ukrainian blackmail did not work.

@DearEdisson @ilze_beren @Adre_N @wlemonesc Ukraine closed the canal because it has no obligation to give away energy for free. Occupation forces have to pay for foreign energy, this is exactly what your link says. Why Akseonov refused to sign a contract with Ukraine for water? Akseonov hates Crimean people?

All this is complete nonsense, because for the past 300 years this region has been de facto part of Russia to a much greater extent than part of any other country. And given the fact that over the past 15-20 years nationalist extremists have come to Kiev, raised with the support of the United States, which reveres Bandera, this gap has increased unacceptably. That's the whole point. This is the essential part of the question. And the fact that dinosaurs and ancient ukras lived in Crimea 200 million years ago, digging the Black Sea, has no serious significance.

@DearEdisson @wlemonesc 1783. Before that—including the era before Christ and the period from 1954 to 2014—these lands were not Russian. You seized them, colonized them, and deported the locals—you’re good at that, yes. But don’t distort history. Also do you enjoy using VPN to accessthe app? 😉

@Glorifiedsit @wlemonesc In the USA, they recognize democratic elections in which their pets participate, this is a fact, but only in other countries - not at home, for example. In Russia, it is believed that the choice should be made without external interference.

@DearEdisson @wlemonesc I consider assemblies that are appointed under free elections to be legitimate. The irony of a pro Russian commentator making this argument is not lost on me. What is the state of Russian democracy these days?

There was a time when the United States and Great Britain had similar ties, but at some point they developed their own, albeit similar culture. For objective reasons. In the case of Crimea, the exact opposite is true. For objective reasons, as nationalists from western Ukraine gained increasing influence in Kiev with the support of Western countries, Crimea and Eastern Ukraine maintained ties with Russia. Hence the logical reaction. When the conflict reached a hot spot and it became clear that Kiev had decided to break with all Russians and violate the agreements that had been reached at the time of Ukraine's withdrawal from the USSR, Crimea returned to Russia.

@DearEdisson @kwebbelaar_ @JacquesSchnee @wlemonesc Using this argument the United Kingdom should be able to claim USA. 300 years ago they owned it, its their people, language and culture. Sweden is allowed to take Denmark as well! And more wars! Does this not feel like mental gymnastics or are you just high on propaganda?

So one thing flows from the other. People have been living for 300 years, they are mainly associated with our culture. They remained part of Ukraine on the basis of an agreement that no one would influence it from outside. The agreement has been violated, the lands are going back. It's just more convenient for people who have been living on them for 300 years. Because the already understandable way of life and development is preserved.

@deepblueteamate @wlemonesc It doesn't matter at all. For 300 years, people who are culturally close to Russia and identify with it have been living in Crimea. There are no other stakeholders whose interests are more important today.

A legitimate assembly is an assembly elected without the influence of third countries. This is the foundation. What the United States has created around the world is a fiction, and a rather crude one at that. In general, if you consider such assemblies to be legitimate, you have the right to put up with them. We will not.

@DearEdisson @wlemonesc Crimean Tatars elected him chair of the Mejlis repeatedly. He wasn’t imposed, he was chosen. Russia banned the assembly because it was too legitimate to ignore. Russia doesn’t give its own people democracy, so the tactics here are straight out of the playbook

Aren't you amused? It's a joke from the category of "Trump - peacemaker". The people can not be represented by a person who became a leader not due to his support but due to external influences. There are a lot of such leaders, and they are usually either unknown or hated in their home countries, like the "King of Iran" with the last name Pahlavi. These are outdated products of the old world, where Western countries used such "universally recognized" leaders to achieve their goals.

@DearEdisson @wlemonesc That’s circular reasoning. Dzhemiliev is a Sakharov Prize laureate recognised globally as a human rights defender. Shared Turkic roots don’t make two distinct peoples interchangeable. You’re still not answering why banning their elected assembly was necessary.

Because he is extremist. You can see right now in many countries with orange revolutions that such bodies with the support of third countries always lead to great trouble and violence. And by the way, both the Crimean tatars and the ordinary tatars ones are one big family of Turkic peoples.

@DearEdisson @wlemonesc Conflating Crimean Tatars with Tatarstan is like confusing two different nations. The Mejlis was the legitimate elected body. Russia banned it as ‘extremist’ & exiled its leaders. That’s not protecting minorities; it’s suppressing them. Still waiting for your actual answer.

Why do you think they are leaders and what are they? Have they been shown on TV? Let me explain it to you. In 1991, there were about a dozen nationalists in Ukraine who were ready to act, not just talk about it. They were carefully presented as the spokespersons of the will of the whole society. They received support from abroad. In 30 years, they came to power, and you know the result. So, answer this question for yourself: why does Russia need people like them? People who stand in line at a foreign embassy and call themselves representatives of the people. For your information, Russia has an autonomous republic with a parliament, and it has been around for a long time. No one goes to the US embassy for grants.

Interestingly, this is exactly what happens in Russia on a regular basis. Now we are all concerned not so much about the special operation as about some problems in domestic politics. Well, just because it all depends on how they will be solved. Speaking in general terms, today's Russia is a Western country in terms of the principles of power (and culturally it is its western part, which is much closer to us), living in accordance with Western ideas, disappointed in its own ideas about the Soviet era. But the experience of the last 30 years shows that we need our own clearer reasons for formulating our position in the world, and that they differ from the generally accepted ones. And this is a difficult task, because this time there is not even a single candidate in sight. It is clear that there are more pro-Western and less pro-Western people. And shy people who suddenly saw great pragmatism and adequacy to the real world in the way the Soviet Union was organized.
