New article ! deepbenchchronicles.com/2026/03/14/dar… Probably the funniest and most unhinged basketball autobiography I’ve ever read. Bad faith, outrageous punchlines, and Dawkins tearing into half the league. Every other page could earn him criminal charges in 2026. Rest in peace, Chocolate Thunder.

Little nugget from @ryenarussillo that I learned- Expansion teams can’t win the lottery for their first 3 years Toronto actually won the 96 lottery but because of that rule they had to switch with Philly and that’s how Allen Iverson ended up a Sixer Never knew that

I don’t understand why refs aren’t told to call these blatant travels (and obvious carries). Everyone would benefit. Players would adjust quickly, and we’d get fewer ridiculous clips like this on social media. The league would gain credibility just by enforcing the most basic rules

NBA refs and the “it’s legal” crowd: “You get a gather step”. This guy gathers the ball, his thoughts, his luggage and frequent flyer miles.

For the past 4 or 5 years, there’s been a prevailing mindset that goes: “We don’t have video footage of it, so I don’t believe it.” 😐 So here’s a short 12-minute report on Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 points. Please share it to help skeptical people understand that back then, we didn’t have the same TV coverage we have today.

Wes Unseld would have turned 80 today. An intriguing comparison from Phil Jackson about Unseld’s legendary outlet passes: "The best guy at throwing an outlet pass I'd ever seen. No one has ever seen it like that. Next guy that was really good at that was Benoit Benjamin. Throw it to half-court on a line". (Phil Jackson) "That got Pearl cookin' with his spin drives in transition. I remember Wes saying he'd check the wing guy for a pass, but if he saw the defender overplaying his guy, he would know to release and he'd flick it full court. Walton was great at that and Kevin Love did it, maybe not quite that good. Jokić now. People would be surprised to heard Benoit. Got a bad rap with his attitude. Wes always seemed aloof and unapproachable but typically selfless with the mentality of a point guard. He'd say it was embarassing to talk about himself" (Sam Smith) Master of the Game, 2025

Was Bam's game a farce? Sort of but Wilt's 100-point game was too. Ridiculous games are fun every once in a while. Deep dive on Wilt's 100 here: hoopsanalyst.com/wilts-100-poin…

@DeepBenchNBA @bball_ref I just read @TimBontemps foreword on The Midrange Theory, he talks about this, in that adv stats are simply another tool to augment our understanding of the game, so we need the actual game knowledge & context to make best use of these tools

@JayErnani @bball_ref Completely agree. Context always matters, whatever stat you highlight. Recency bias is always lurking. Just because we can quantify everything now doesn’t mean performances can actually be ranked rationally.

@DeepBenchNBA @bball_ref MJ’s 69 pts game is highly underrated. Bulls needed every single one of those as well, with a tight OT win. With 18 rbd, 6 ast, 5 stocks & only 2 TOV on 73% TS, I can’t think of many better games in the history of the sport

New article! George Mikan was the face of the Minneapolis Lakers dynasty, but Vern Mikkelsen was one of its pillars: six championships, Hall of Famer, and arguably the first true power forward, before the term even existed. deepbenchchronicles.com/2026/03/07/the… Read the story of “The Great Dane.”

Happy birthday to Shaquille O’Neal and Greg Ostertag, both born on March 6. They faced each other nine times in the playoffs. The Big O won eight of them.
