In Swedish this tool is called a "cowfoot" (kofot), which makes perfect sense because it's clearly looks like a hoof. In English it's called a crowbar which makes no sense, smaller crowbars are sometimes called cats paw and honestly that's not much better. The Finnish word for it is "Sorkkarauta" (hoof iron) which is probably the most descriptive name for it.

The craziest thing ever happened on YouTube. La7, an Italian television channel has used footage from Nvidia DLSS 5 Trailer and then sent a copyright strike to every YouTube video that supposedly used “their footage”, including Nvidia themselves. Nvidia’s own DLSS 5 announcement video has now been taken down by La7 as you can see here.

@exQUIZitely In modern times indie games often use retro art styles, either due to nostalgia, or because AAA art is too expensive. We don't typically get quite down to the 8-bit era. The sweet spot for graphics seems to be around 16-bit.

Studies have shown that older games with simpler graphics had a much more stimulating effect on a gamer's brain - actively "training" creative skills and imagination, with positive impact on memory building and abstraction skills. If that sounded to scientific, have a look at the 4 images. The older ones among you will recognize some classic games. In the first one your brain would turn that into a "Rambo" style scenario, dropped in the jungle fighting against hordes of enemies. Have a closer look at the main character - that's 3 colors and a pile of pixels. Your mind does the rest. In the second image your brain converts the image into an epic space battle against aliens, with you sitting in a spaceship, fighting wave after wave. Again, have a closer look at the aliens. One (!) color, 2 animation phases. Now look at your "spaceship". In the third image you are teleported by your creative mind into a fantastic world with heroes, battles, an open world, portals and so on. A magic world, that was created aong the way, by your mind. The fourth picture turns you into Bruce Lee. The common thing in all of those examples is your brain "filling in the blanks" - and that's EXACTLY the part that's positively stimulating it. Now think of hyper-realistic modern games with graphics so good that your brain doesn't need to do any "imagining" anymore... instead it turns into pure consumption mode. Brain waves look entirely different then. No creative areas will fire up. The reason why many retro gamers have fond memories of old games is not just nostalgia. It is connected to what those games have done to our brains and imaginative minds at the time. They didn't oversaturate us - they merely hinted at the right direction and our brains did the rest. Old games were similar to books - the world was created by the reader/player. And those worlds looked different for each and everyone of us.

Well -- I first bought the Japanese version. And was slowly, slowly, painstakingly translating that to English. This was a couple decades ago, and it was beyond my level at that time. So I bought the English and read that. But I should go back to the Japanese now... "Jikan dorobou to nusumareta jikan wo ningen ni torikaeshite kureta onna no ko no fushigi na monogatari." Yeah, I can read that now. Michael Ende's second wife was Japanese, and a translator at that, so Momo seeped into Japanese culture.

@Luscombepilot @HansMahncke @instapundit Then: Wright Bros have to go to France to prove to USA they can make something fly. Now: European entrepreneurs go to USA b/c of European overregulation, taxes, and that's where the VC money is. Future: Hope France can reclaim their support of entrepreneurship!

The story behind the New York Times’ 1903 claim that human flight was between one and ten million years away is even worse than it looks. Once you understand the backstory, you realize that the New York Times story is not really about flight at all but about how elites and credentialed “experts” mistake their own failures for the boundaries of possibility. The New York Times did not dismiss the possibility of powered flight at random. There was a very specific reason behind it. At the time, America’s most prominent scientific authority, Smithsonian Secretary Samuel Langley, had been showered with large amounts of taxpayer funding to build an aircraft, the Langley Aerodrome. Despite all the money, institutional backing, and elite prestige, Langley and his team could not get it to fly, culminating in a series of very public failures, the last on December 8, 1903. So when the New York Times declared that flight was millions of years away, what it was really saying was that if the most credentialed and well-funded “experts” cannot do it, then it cannot be done. A mere nine days later, the elites’ proclamation of impossibility lay in ruins. Two totally unknown bicycle mechanics from Ohio achieved the first powered flight using improvised parts, a few hundred dollars of their own money, and sheer persistence. The story of flight is, at its core, a story of the triumph of American individualism over elite credentialism. The fact that it was the New York Times that inadvertently delivered the proof is the most fitting conclusion imaginable.

The story gets worse after 1903. Orville and Wilber go back to Dayton and by 1905 they can take off from a field and fly under complete control anywhere they wish. They have “solved” flying. So they put their plane away and begin to try to sell their inventions. But no one wants to buy it. No one of the elite really thinks it works. Finally in 1908 they take their three year old airplane to Le Mans France to a prestigious air meet. Some experts have heard rumors these bicycle people from Dayton have a real airplane, but no one believes it. They’re not elite, so surely they can’t fly. The Europeans can get a machine airborne, but not for long, and they can’t control it. Can’t make circles around a field and land in a specific spot. So the Wrights launch their airplane, fly it around a bit, and the world goes mad. Suddenly man can fly! 5 years after Kitty Hawk, the world, and the NYTimes discovers that humans can really fly, because the “experts” at Le Mans France have proclaimed it so. It took the Wrights 5 years to get the world to recognize that flight was possible, and they had to go to France to prove it.

@Lons It seems unfair to tie A.I. to the Human Slop era. There's A.I. Slop and there's Human Slop. No need to go mixing it all up together.

I remain fascinated by the "Pre-Slop" genre, stuff that dated AI by years, even decades, but foresaw where all "content" was ultimately going. Peter Gabriel dropped this in 1992! Prescient AF.

@Lons There's something about Peter Gabriel, Genesis, and similar bands like The Police and Sting in that they were music made by adults for adults. Whatever happened to that? It's like no one makes music for 35 year olds anymore

@skeeto111 @Lons Yeah, that’s why I’m struggling to think of a contemporary equivalent. Teenagers didn’t really listen to Phil Collins at the time and he wasn’t “hip” either but he sold a lot of records. I don’t know of much that fits that mold now.
