Leonardo da Vinci’s self supporting bridge, designed around 1485–1502 for rapid deployment by troops, is a portable, fastener free structure. Interlocking notched beams use gravity and friction for stability, getting stronger as more weight is applied.

@Scratch_Point_Z The way localizers talk about translation weirds me out, like it's an esoteric alchemical process. I think they're obfuscating the fact that they're just bad translators who aren't beholden to the same standards as people working with literature or non-video game media generally.

The reality that localizers will never admit to is that it is an inherently flawed process by extension of the concept itself. Localization is all about making changes to "adapt media for the target culture," so while less glaring examples may go under the radar, there are tons of unnecessary alterations to scripts. Current examples are brought to light all the time, but are written off with the same parroted "you can't translate 1:1" or "it's not a big deal" (or even claiming said changes are superior to the original) type replies by people whose only goal is to consume as much product as possible with no care for the integrity of anything. Localization's loose approach for what constitutes "faithful translation" is the problem & that is what must be fixed.

@Tom_Rowsell Interested to see the connection made here between Celts and Romans. Some book I was reading suggested the "Italics" were ethnically close to Celts, but I never found an answer to it if there is one.

@AngloRoam @TKsMantis Seems like a lot of trouble to make a shitty, lazy game like Starfield look photorealistic. Is that really the selling point for you, being forced-fed Starfield? Why not just let it fail because Bethesda is shitty and lazy?

@TKsMantis You can just turn it off, and enjoy Starfield on all its “artistic intention”. Why do you have an issue with other people using it? What you actually want, is to control others experience because you know you’ll be stuck with a subpar one, if you switch it off in settings.

Two sticks of RAM are over $900 right now because of companies like NVIDIA who want to negate artist direction in video games with an AI slop filter that makes everything look like a snapchat photo, but nah people are just being "performative" by not liking it. OK lol
Gaz@Septic_Sauce

All jokes aside, I think the DLSS 5 hysteria and concerns (valid/non-performative ones) will blow over once we see the tech being utilised by devs. The recency bias over "AI Slop" narratives are steering the discourse atm.

So proud of DLSS5: Fully generative neural rendering, in real-time, in real games. Mind-blowing realism. A whole new generation of real-time graphics. A decade of continuous research and development. Coming soon to PCs everywhere. 💚

It’s retarded to think eugenics is bad. Everyone knows it’s good if people get smarter and healthier, so what difference does it make if that happens through human agency? Why leave it up to chance forever?

@CAMIKAZE78 I've been enjoying retro style indie games the last several years, and every time I see Steam users begging for the difficulty to be lowered it still surprises me. There's even drama on Retro Achievements now because users think 1CCing an arcade game is an unreasonable challenge.

“Toxic casuals” in the gaming community who not only reject, but advocate for the removal of skill gaps in games have done more damage to gaming than any “try hard” ever has. Gaming casually is perfectly fine, but losing to those who take the time to learn, embrace, and master the mechanics of a game should be expected and accepted if you do play more casually.

Reading Blood Meridian. I wonder if there will ever be an author like Cormac McCarthy again, or if we’ve seen the last of the truly great writers. Every sentence he composes is art, like a painting. You see and feel what he’s trying to convey. He wrestles with big things, the human condition, good and evil. He doesn’t give you answers but he leaves you with a lot to think about. An absolute master of his craft. Not the last, I hope, but I don’t know.

>- highly educated society High unemployment rate. Educated Canadians tend to go to the US because zero opportunity in Canada. >- high trust society regardless of race, creed, or politics Just lol that was true twenty years ago we have fent traffickers being let off routinely, junkies everywhere, scams all over the place >- not having school shootings every day of the week A troon just shot up a school in BC but go off, king >- looking down on Americans is our British aristocratic inheritance Massive cope, Labour just removed the peerage from the House of Lords, what aristocracy are you even talking about man
xenoglossy 🪐@Sorcerer0fEld

“Not being American” is load-bearing in ways the American cannot fathom: - highly educated society - high trust society regardless of race, creed, or politics - not having school shootings every day of the week - looking down on Americans is our British aristocratic inheritance

Another example of statistical grandstanding by what appears to be a reputable health organization. They try to scare you with claims that there's a 49% higher risk of diabetes in red meat consumption but what don't tell you is that that's relative risk (a comparison between two groups). The actual risk was between 3 and 5%. Also consider the study they based this on used food questionnaires that counted pizza and cheeseburgers as servings of red meat. No accounting for the possibility that the diabetes was caused by the crust or the obligatory bun and fries that comes with almost every cheeseburger in America was considered. This post and this study are utterly disingenuous.
Physicians Committee@PCRM

A study of nearly 35,000 adults found that higher red meat intake was associated with a 24 to 49% higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Replacing one serving with legumes, nuts, or seeds was linked with a 9 to 14% lower risk. Read more: pcrm.org/news/health-nu…
