Nintendo Power Volume 16 (Sept/Oct 1990) featured a short guide to Final Fantasy from the Waterfall to the Sky Castle, ultimately advertising the Nintendo Power Final Fantasy Player's Guide. It also announced the final part of the Final Fantasy Treasure Quest, a contest that offered various Final Fantasy related prizes for players who correctly answered trivia questions. The grand prize was a 4 day trip to the Virgin Islands, where the winner & 3 friends would dress up as Light Warriors & go on a guided adventure with an explorer's handbook & filmed by Nintendo Power representatives. The runner-up prize would award 50 lucky winners with a custom crafted crystal orb. Eleven years ago on r/FinalFantasy, it was questioned whether or not anyone knew who won the contest. A user called "Layden76" commented four years ago that he was the winner & gave a brief description of the trip, claiming to even still have the explorer's handbook, but unfortunately never made another post again. Although there was no solid conclusion, it's an interesting piece of Nintendo Power & Final Fantasy history nonetheless.

"It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it." --Benjamin Franklin. The most dangerous cities in America are majority black. Some of the most dangerous cities in the world are in Sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti. The most dangerous cities in Europe have a large African population. How does that reputation not affect how people in the world see you? 🤷‍♂️

@Scratch_Point_Z What delusions? That he thinks overseas fans don't deserve to have the orchestrated version of his music on their games (hence why our versions had the MIDI music), and denied Japanese war crimes in WW2?

Dragon Quest games have excellent soundtracks that capture the essence of adventure & have been beloved for decades. Sugiyama's compositions are timeless, these creatures simply cannot handle that someone who didn't adhere to their delusions is capable of making something truly beautiful.

@Scratch_Point_Z @Xenomorphica "people" and its one reply. You use politics to pointlessly muddle the topic that doesnt go anywhere beyond "its old midi tracks that should be replaced already"

PS1 & PS2 crushed all of their competitors for a reason, they had much larger, more varied libraries. But Saturn was an entire platform of hidden gems because it sold so poorly. I knew maybe one kid who had one. N64 was a distant 2nd to PS1, it was great too. They're all great.
gspurling87@gspurling87

@Sonic_Hedgeblog No, because the Sega Saturn sucked and the N64 was way better, and had a lot more enjoyable, playable games.

Therein lies the problem with localization; it makes changes based on this nebulous "vibe" approach rather than remaining truly faithful to the original Japanese script. It's easier than ever to access information, there is no reason why the audience cannot simply figure out any cultural differences they might be unaware of. It's really not difficult to account for said differences & understand the "feeling" that's being conveyed without unnecessary edits. Translate faithfully, it's on the Western audience to adapt to Japanese sensibilities & many are happy to do just that, because they actually care about having a translation that adheres as closely to the original work as possible.

The truth is that equality feels like "oppression" to these people because there is absolutely no way they can compete on a truly level playing field, which is demonstrated by every meaningful metric of success & all the countries where they reside. There's honestly no point in even attempting to share a society with those who will always view you as the enemy.

🚨 BREAKING: President Trump says NO MORE SOMALIANS in the USA. He's DONE. "Their country STINKS! They contribute NOTHING." 💯 "I don't want 'em, to be honest. OK? Some say, that's not politically correct. I DON'T CARE. I don't want them in our country. Their country's no good for a reason!" "I'm understanding Somalians ripped Minnesota that place for BILLIONS of dollars! And they contribute NOTHING. The welfare's like 88%!" "I always watch [Ilhan Omar] complain about our Constitution, how she's treated 'badly,' or it's a bad place, hates Jewish people, hate's everybody. She's a TERRIBLE person." "I watch what's happening in Minnesota, the land of a thousand lakes? This beautiful place, I see these people RIPPING it off."

@Scratch_Point_Z I love how the Son of Chef from South Park (which is his only claim to fame) forgot about terms like "Misogynoir", "colorist" and "light skinned privilege" fast, huh? And let us not even get started on how people from Ghana treat Somalis and others....

@revenant_MMXX I don't think I've seen it before, but apparently, it's just a "natural evolution" now. And these are the people entrusted with English versions of Japanese scripts.

@Scratch_Point_Z Where did this weird spelling of "holistic" come from? I've been seeing it a lot lately and don't remember ever seeing it before this year. Was "holistic" not clear enough for these idiots?

@inkfycreates It's crazy because just a few weeks ago I had someone basically denying this ever happened. People forget that JRPGs (and RPGs in general) were very niche & not well-respected outside of those who already loved them.

People forget that reviewers HATED any non-popular JRPGs back in the day. Game reviewers at the time were Xenophobic as hell. Outside of your latest FF and maybe DQ, anything with an anime aesthetic was ridiculed. It was brutal.
kij@kijuler

everytime I see some huge outlet talk about jrpgs I want you all remember what those people REALLY thought before persona 5 broke into mainstream its insane how being a fan of this genre would get you bullied untill suddenly everyone decided its actually good
