I'm gonna do it again. The original patent from Hiram Percy Maxim called it a Silencer. The terms "silencer" and "suppressor" are actually both correct.
Supressing gunshot blast is what it actually does, therefore "suppressor" is the technically correct term.
Silencer is what Maxim's patent says, therefore "Silencer" is also correct.
