Catholics completely remade the Just War tradition in the 80’s and are doing it again. This is not “Just War Doctrine”.

It's an ugly question and his suggestion that maybe it should be edited out reveals his conscience.
We are talking about Mother Teresa. We know she saw horrors. That is not the story. It is the light that she brought amid such evil.
We are left to compare the horrors of Calcutta to receiving the Eucharist in the hand. This is an offense to those poor she served and does nothing for normal people to compel them to receive reverently. What, are you saying that the horrors of Calcutta are bad but if you receive in the hand it is worse than some third world horror? Very misguided.

The Matt Fradd clip of the priest talking about Mother Teresa highlights the danger inherent in content creation. @RealMattFradd should have edited it out as harmful (and debunked) gossip. The priest interviewed has put everyone in a terrible position: either Mother and her beautiful sisters were liars... or he is. Another alternative is possible I suppose but hardly helps. Golly what a disaster.
The facts: This story about Mother was circulating some years ago as well and was debunked by her order. She allowed her sisters to receive in the hand because the Church permitted it. In addition to that plain fact, Mother regularly spoke firmly in the language of absolutes about evil. The central message of her public life was that the greatest evils were indifference, lack of love, and abortion.
Mother wanted us to focus on that message. The Church canonized her with that message at the forefront. We should ignore the podcast gossip and maybe take the opportunity to read and listen and contemplate what Mother wanted most for us to know.

None of your physical acts of reverence come anywhere close to what is objectively due to Christ in the Eucharist. Christ has made the interior prayer "have mercy on me, a sinner" sufficient in this regard.
Still, you may do physically whatever cultivates this penitent spirit inside your heart, and whatever permissible physical approach you believe shows the most reverence. But you cannot impose any of this as a requirement on others when the Church makes no such imposition.

It’s extremely dangerous to say that the intimacy between us and the Church ought to be limited because the intimacy between members of the Church and other members of the Church was abused. At no time ever has a priest, bishop, or Church document cited abuse victims as even a consideration when it comes to Communion in the hand.
Because once you introduce that logic, you’ve shifted the entire framework—from what is objectively due to Christ in the Eucharist, to what feels psychologically safer in light of human failure. And those are not the same category.
The Church has never grounded Eucharistic discipline in fear of man’s sin, but in reverence toward God’s presence. Abuse is evil, and it must be confronted, punished, and prevented with absolute seriousness—but it does not become a theological principle that reshapes sacramental practice.
Otherwise, the implication becomes unavoidable: that the sins of men can redefine the manner in which we approach God Himself.
And that is a far more dangerous concession than people realize.

This is something not often considered by those who haven’t experienced physical abuse. Hand-to-mouth is a relatively intimate interaction. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but it is rather close and personal. Sometimes fingers even come in contact with the mouth. I taught my young children to receive this way, but I will not insist that they do. Hand to hand is safe physically and psychologically. It is approved by the Church, practiced by the Fathers, and it is still reverent, especially since reverence is first a disposition of the heart.

The error of Modern Science as a philosophy is that it posits all things as species of one common Genus - matter. There are no essences, that is, things cannot be divided by real specific differences, but only divided in our minds by accidents and attributes. There is only one real thing to the modern mind, of which there is an infinity of individual variations. But you cannot have science of infinities.

I am studying Porphyry with my four boys, and it boggles my mind that "classical" schools relegate such studies to like a 2 week breeze-through, if that, in 11th grade or something. Porphyry is an entire course in itself, and its not even yet Aristotle. Catholic schools don't even bother to study it at all.

This is from the Catholic prayer book. All Christian soldiers should be assured that God hears their prayers in war. They are not abandoned in their efforts to defend the innocent, promote peace, and stand against evil men.

@One_That_Rules @austeni St. Augustine worked out a "just war" doctrine. One of the main criteria is that the war must be for a justice and peace and must not inflict more damage than required to restore justice and peace. Out war in Iran fails the criteria. Read it in the Catechism.

This talking-point implodes on impact. Yes, the Pope knows all about just war doctrine, and no, this is not a just war (it fails all criteria). Leo’s point was theological: God’s way is nonviolence; it is blasphemy to invoke divine sanction on warmongering.

King Saint Louis of France led and fought in two Crusades, which were called "Armed Pilgrimages", to defend Christendom and for the remission of sins. He never renounced his military efforts as evil, but rather regarded them as pious, penitential and devotional work.

I am curious whether the Catholic bishops have spoken out against this injustice of the Biden admin targeting prolife and Catholic people. I know one of them personally, it was a grave overreach of power meant to intimidate political opponents.

I do not care if my POTUS is a Christian. I care that Joe Biden sent innocent pro-life Christians to prison - in one case a grandmother was sentenced to 8 years. The federal judge sentencing her mocked Christianity. Trump freed them. The rest of you can moralize. I don’t care.

@Grace_Peletier They have such benefits on the taxpayers' dollar, meaning other people work to provide those benefits, all while the entity appears praiseworthy in the public eye because they present themselves as a charity which makes no profit. It is unjust.

Good. Every other day I see Catholics starting "non-profits" for works that they should fund themselves instead of constant "fundraising." So lay people, who didn't choose the religious life can have health insurance, retirement plans, etc, (none of which my family has!) Shouldn't charitable works be done sacrificially, not to keep up with the middle class?

@DouthatNYT I agree. I voted for Trump/Vance in part because they promised to end the unnecessary foreign wars. But this either/or binary -- with the Pope or with Trump/Vance -- is a false dilemma on this issue.

How is it that the US Catholic Church is content with closing parishes & having virtually no more Catholic education in the US & yet they expect Americans to follow moral laws like those proposed in the just war theory? I even see clerics blaming public education for this fault.
